Can’t wait to train, early workout today; Weird cravings last night. Lisa could eat this kind of stuff all day and not gain a pound. I hate her.

I am really in the mood to lift this morning. I don’t think I can’t wait for my usual afternoon workout time, so I think I’m going to train this morning. Today is back/biceps/abs day, and I’ll be deadlifting pretty heavy. My lower back has been fairly achy this week (probably from Monday’s record-breaking squats), so I’m going to have to be careful to not let my form slip at all. Also, I mentioned that… [Read more]

Record-breaking workout; New photos + 2011 vs 2012 comparison. I took this photo yesterday, post-workout. At about 5.9% body fat, my vascularity is becoming quite pronounced.

Are you guys getting tired of me talking about how great my workouts have been? Well too bad! ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s not my fault. I always report the good, the bad and the ugly, and so it is my duty to mention that, yet again, yesterday’s workout was freaking outstanding. I kicked off my workout by adding 10 pounds to my bench press, and manged to do more reps than I did last week. Up until… [Read more]

My take on supplements. I took this picture back in early 2006. Most of this stuff is a waste of money.

Today I want to talk about supplements. The supplement industry is a massive 60+ billion dollar machine, and it’s fueled by flashy advertising campaigns that promise fast, almost magical results. When you’re working hard and are excited about losing fat or gaining muscle, the desire to want to maximize your efforts is, naturally, quite strong. The supplement companies realize that, and they are absolute masters at convincing you that their products are just what you… [Read more]

Yesterday’s leg workout was insane; New strength personal records. The squat and deadlift area of my home gym.

As I close in on the end of my 2012 cut, I am continuing to carefully monitor my strength and energy. For several reasons, I knew yesterday’s leg workout was going to be an important litmus test along those lines… First of all, last week’s leg workout (click the link for the actual workout I’m doing) was outstanding in every regard. I set strength personal records for my body weight on every single exercise, and… [Read more]

Two long days of yard work, tired but happy. 40 feet of Bougainvillea will turn the back fence into an amazing wall of color.

Lisa and I busted our butts doing spring yard work over the weekend. Despite two very long, grueling, sometimes hot, sometimes rainy/windy days of labor, we still did not get everything done! We’ve got at least one more full day next weekend–possibly even two more days. Out front we’re pretty much done. We got all the plants, palms, trees, bushes and hedges trimmed; we weeded and mulched; we planted dozens of beautiful annuals (Petunias); we… [Read more]

2012 cut weekly progress report: Week #9. Slim Guide Skin Fold Caliper

Week #9 of my 2012 cutting program is complete, and itโ€™s time to check my progress and make any necessary adjustments to my diet and training. NOTE: If you’re trying to lose fat or gain muscle it’s absolutely critical that you check your progress–and not just with a bathroom scale. I recommend that once every week you check your scale weight, your body fat percentage (using a caliper, not an inaccurate Bioelectrical Impedance scale) and… [Read more]

Spring garden project weekend. Our backyard oasis. I tackled the pond project in the summer of 2010 and it was worth every last second of blood, sweat and blisters.

No mountain biking this weekend: it’s time for our annual big spring yard work marathon! I’ve already done quite a bit of work outside over the past couple of weeks, but the bulk of what remains to be done will be accomplished over the next two days… Between our front yard’s extensive landscaping and the landscaping in the backyard (especially around the pond), there’s always plenty of work to do out there. Maintaining the yard… [Read more]

The dreaded spring time change approaches… Die.

Long time readers of my blog know how much I detest the time changes–especially the spring time change. I have an extremely sensitive internal clock, and the one hour jump forward (which happens this Sunday) really screws with my circadian rhythm. I’ll save my usual rant (for now, at least) on how utterly stupid, outdated, useless and disruptive these twice-a-year time changes are, and instead talk about what I’m doing to ease the transition. My… [Read more]

Incredible workout yesterday; New photo, new PRs.

I was even more fired up than usual to train yesterday, and I had a feeling it was going to be another excellent workout (chest/triceps/delts). It was… For the ninth week in a row I added weight and/or reps to every exercise. I kicked off the workout by adding 10 more pounds to my flat bench press, which I supersetted with triceps rope pressdowns (+5 pounds to those). Just 60 seconds of rest between each… [Read more]

Finish line in sight… I can see it!

It’s a somewhat unusual (but good!) feeling to be as lean as I am and so close to the end of my cut in early March. This morning I weighed in at 176 pounds, which is 1.2 pounds lighter than I was when posted my usual weekly progress report this past Sunday. I suspect that by this Sunday I’ll be around 175 pounds and 6% body fat, maybe even lower. Regardless of what my stats… [Read more]
