Finally reached total muscular failure, but still set new strength PRs. My dumbbell rack

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, yesterday’s leg workout was absolutely phenomenal! For the ninth straight week I added weight to every exercise (including 10 more pounds to my squats and lunges), and I hit my target reps on every set but one. Yep, I finally reached total muscular failure. As a reminder, I’m still doing this brutal 320-rep leg workout: 4×20 Leg extensions 4×20 Lying leg curls 4×20 Barbell Squats 4×20… [Read more]

Mountain bike upgrades complete: report & photos; New personal record. We're going to be spending a lot more time together. :)

I’m still putting the finishing touches on my 2012 cut (presently at 177.2 pounds/6.5% body fat), but my main mountain bike has already completed her fat loss program. When I started this project a few weeks ago my Trek Fuel EX 8 weighed in at 30.11 pounds, and I knew that there was a lot of room for improvement. My goal was to trim the fat while considerably improving performance, handling and reliability. Swapping out… [Read more]

2012 cut weekly progress report: Week #8. Myotape

Week #8 of my 2012 cutting program is complete, and it’s time to check my progress and make any necessary adjustments to my diet and training. NOTE: If you’re trying to lose fat or gain muscle it’s absolutely critical that you check your progress–and not just with a bathroom scale. I recommend that once every week you check your scale weight, your body fat percentage (using a caliper, not an inaccurate Bioelectrical Impedance scale) and… [Read more]

More strength PRs (progress photo); New Favorite Things item: the Ab Wheel. Ab rollouts make traditional crunches feel like angel kisses.

I killed it in the weight room yesterday! I’m now lifting more on every single exercise that I’m currently doing than I’ve ever handled before at this body weight. In some cases (particularly legs), the weights I’m using are considerably heavier than what I was lifting at more than 20 pounds heavier body weight. Also, I’m happy to report that I felt no back pain while deadlifting yesterday. Over the past eight weeks the strength… [Read more]

The Ab Wheel

Ab rollouts make traditional crunches feel like angel kisses. This is one piece of training equipment you will love and hate equally.

Health and fitness: much more than just looking good naked.

If today’s workout is as good as the rest of my workouts have been this week (it will be), then I will have set new strength personal records for my body weight on every single exercise I’m currently doing. I can’t wait to train today. In fact, instead of my usual late afternoon training time I think I’m going to lift on my lunch hour today. I can’t even begin to describe how positive, energetic… [Read more]

March 2012 Transformation Spotlight: Terps01fan2006 March 2012 TSM: Terps01fan2006!

For the March 2012 Transformation Spotlight of the Month I’ve selected JSF forum member “Terps01fan2006” (Ryan). In 2007 Ryan was morbidly obese and decided that it was time to make a change. Like many of those who resolve to lose weight for the New Year, Ryan’s first attempt at a transformation lasted a good solid week. The seed was planted, however, and Ryan found it within himself to to try again the next month. Closing… [Read more]

Incredible workout yesterday (new progress photo); March 2012 TSM! February 29, 2012. Closing out an intense, but enjoyable, training session. About 6.5% body fat.

Yesterday’s chest/triceps/delts workout was, without any doubt, the best of the best so far on this cut. Not only did I enjoy every second of the workout, my strength and energy was through the roof. I added 10 pounds to last week’s bench press weight, and it felt more like I’d removed 10 pounds! My bench press was just the start: I added weight on every exercise, and hit my target reps (actually exceed them… [Read more]
