New shrimp recipe posted; Up early this morning. Grilled Shrimp with Brown Sugar and Cayenne

Last night I made a new shrimp recipe that Lisa discovered (which I modified slightly): Grilled Shrimp with Brown Sugar and Cayenne Pepper. The amount of brown sugar in this dish is quite small–just enough to balance out the kick provided by the cayenne pepper. A little lime juice adds a nice hint of citrus, while the fresh garlic rounds out this simple, but delicious, recipe. Prepping this recipe took practically no time at all,… [Read more]

New rotors installed; Mounting bracket issue resolved thanks to home shop. New Magura Storm Rotor mounted on my Trek Fuel EX 8.

The new brake pads that I installed on my Trek Fuel EX 8 highlighted an issue that I was aware of, but had not been a problem worth addressing until the new pads were in place: out of true rotors. I knew my rotors (both of them) had a few very minor bends in them, but it wasn’t enough to cause rubbing on the pads. Well, once I got the new pads installed the tolerances… [Read more]

HD video footage of the trails at Mt. Dora. This is the lone "red" feature at Mt. Dora: it's 22 feet and nearly vertical.

I’ve had a few requests for video footage of the Mt. Dora trails, and so Tuesday I took my with me. I decided to film one complete lap of the main loop with all the “blue” (intermediate options). There are no cuts and no edits, so you see the whole main trail, which consists of “Florida Flow”, “Little Blue Roller” (blue), “Tacoma Trail” (blue), “Extra Crispy” (blue) and “Little Dipper” (blue). The first minute or… [Read more]

Revision to yesterday’s blog; HIIT workout: bedding in new brake pads. A brand new Avid Elixir organic brake pad: 4mm

I made a couple of incorrect assumptions in yesterday’s blog, and I need to follow up on that with some new information that has come to light. Yesterday I received my replacement brake pads, and I decided to measure a brand new pad with my . As you can see in the photo, the the new pad + pad backing is exactly 4.00 millimeters thick. The backing is 2.20mm thick, and so that means a… [Read more]

Hydraulic disc brakes: A cautionary tale (Alternate title: OW!) The brake pad backing is 2.20mm thick, and so this pad is worn to 0.96mm.

Yesterday morning the weather was absolutely amazing: clear, cool and sunny. We had some rain a few days ago, and over the weekend many improvements were made to the trails at Mt. Dora. Where to ride was a no-brainer. As expected, the trails were running super fast! My average moving speed on the first lap was more than 1 MPH faster than my personal best ever. Five new bermed corners had been added, and several… [Read more]

Fun long weekend; Incredible weather; Follow-up on bike upgrades. Dirty but running smooth, the way a mountain bike should be.

After Sunday’s splurge meal of beef fajitas, rice, beans, tortilla chips and a margarita I was feeling pretty bloated when I woke up yesterday morning. Actually we all were, so yesterday I made everyone a healthy breakfast: an egg white omelet with cilantro, sweet peppers, garlic and onions sautéed in a little EVOO, whole grain toast and (of course!) my “famous” roasted red potatoes. The weather yesterday was unseasonably cool, but sunny and beautiful. We… [Read more]

Fun weekend; Quick blog: house guests.

This is going to be a quick blog, as we’ve got some house guests and I need to wrap up some work this morning before everyone gets up…. Last night a bunch of us went out to eat, and we decided to go for Mexican food. I had fajitas (of course!), and that was just my third splurge meal since my cut ended more than five weeks ago. I’m up a couple of pounds of… [Read more]
