Decided to weight train yesterday; Riding this morning.

I was going to postpone my upper body workout and go mountain biking yesterday morning, but when I stepped outside it was very hot and there was a lot of smoke in the air.

I came across this controlled burn at Wekiwa last year. Controlled burns are done, in part, to reduce the fuel available to wildfires. The smoke makes cardio very difficult.

I’m not aware of any wildfires burning in the area right now, but it’s been very dry here and the conditions are ripe for wildfires. I suspect they are doing controlled burns at Wekiwa (as you can see in the photograph I’ve run across them before). Wekiwa was the only place I had time to ride yesterday morning, but I was not in the mood to attempt a workout while inhaling smoke. I decided to proceed with my regularly scheduled weight training session.

This morning it’s much nicer: just 60° (F), and no sign of smoke anywhere. I also have a little more time available to me today, so I’m definitely hitting the trails this morning.

It was very strange doing an entire upper body workout yesterday. Over the past decade I’ve always done 3, 4 and even 5 day splits and never full-body or complete upper/lower body workouts. I stuck entirely to compound exercises: deadlifts, bent over rows, clean & press, flat barbell bench presses and weighted chest dips. I decided to go heavy, I kept my reps fairly low (6-8), took 2-3 minutes between sets and didn’t use any intensity techniques like supersets or drops sets. It felt good to slow down and go heavy. No back pain or other issues, but I’ll be guarded about that.

The fresh, cool air is calling. I’m going to eat and saddle up. Have a fantastic day!
