Productive and fun weekend; Monday is no longer “Leg Day”.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend! I spent Saturday working outside all day, and on Sunday I did some gardening out back, relaxed, took a bunch of nature photographs, watched a movie with Lisa and played some poker. For dinner I made my favorite stir fry, which I never seem to tire of. I was in bed a little after 9:00 PM and I slept until 6:30!

Last Wednesday I announced that I’m going to scale back on my weight training over the summer so I can mountain bike more often. Part of this experiment includes eliminating all lower body weight training when I’m not actively cutting. For a very long time Monday has always been “Leg Day” for me, and so it feels pretty strange to not have a leg workout on tap for this afternoon…

We're going to be spending a lot more time together. :)

We're going to be spending a lot more time together. 🙂

…but I’m excited! Normally I train legs on Monday, which leaves my legs too sore/tired to mountain bike on Tuesday; I would weight train again on Wednesday and–finally–on Thursday I could go mountain biking. That all changes this week. I can ride today, tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday if I want to! I can get an upper body weight training workout in on Friday, and then I’ve got the whole weekend to mountain bike or do whatever else I want.

It’s going to be an interesting experiment. I have a feeling that all the riding I do is going to keep my legs in excellent shape. This is especially true because I’m riding clipped in, and that is going to give my hamstrings a lot of action. Furthermore, I’m riding dirt trails with all kinds of natural obstacles and varying conditions, and those factors provide my legs with constantly changing challenges.

I am going to hit the dirt, lots to do today. Have a great day!

  1. Nice! I am intrigued to see how your training vs mountain biking pans out. I am in a similar situation…I love to mountain bike, but need to workout and take on a transformation. Not sure what the best plan is to allow me to ride, yet get in the proper workouts and cardio I need to shed fat and gain muscle.

    • When I am cutting I do LISS (on the recumbent bike) the day after leg day, and get my mountain biking in on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. I definitely feel that you should continue to weight train (including legs) while you’re losing fat. Resistance training is so important to maintaining muscle/strength while in a caloric deficit.

  2. I think your decision is right on the money. You’re legs will get plenty of workouts on the bike and it’s a lot more fun than doing squats!
