No records, but a grueling ride; More thoughts on the Garmin Edge 500. Average heart rate of 182 BPM for ~45 minutes.

Yesterday I decided to ride at Wekiwa, and I was looking to break some personal records. We’ve had a lot of rain lately, and I expected the sugar sand to be packed down (as well as sugar sand can be, that is). I was quite surprised to find that Wekiwa apparently did not receive much rain at all: the sand had clearly seen some precipitation, but it was still very loose. Also, there are a… [Read more]

Automatic potted herb, tomato and vegetable irrigation system. The digital Mister Timer allows me to easily adjust the watering start times as well as the frequency and duration of each watering session.

In a comment attached to yesterday’s blog it was pointed out by JSF member “DFS” that I never gave any details about the automatic herb, tomato and vegetable irrigation system I installed earlier this year. Regular watering of your edibles is obviously critical (especially in hot climates), and today I’d like to show you how easy and inexpensive it is rig up your own automatic irrigation system. The first thing you’ll need to do is… [Read more]

Soggy, but enjoyable, weekend; So many peppers! These are some of the peppers we gave to Lisa's parents. In this shot are serrano, hot banana and sweet snacking peppers.

We had a very nice Memorial day weekend with family. I didn’t do a lick of exercise, and I had TWO splurge meals: Fajitas on Sunday, and pizza last night. Last night’s pizza was cheese pizza with some fresh chopped garlic and rosemary, tomato and basil from our gardens. I may have also had some garlic bread. ๐Ÿ˜€ I really need to get on the bike, but this morning it’s still raining. I may just… [Read more]

A Memorial Day thank you. flag

Just a quick blog today, as we have house guests and I don’t want to spend too much time banging away on the keyboard. I never get political in my blog, and I’m not going to start today. What I would like to do is simply express my gratitude for all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for my country. I urge my fellow Americans to join me in taking some… [Read more]

Rain on the way; Shoulder acting up after workout. Yesterday's Mt. Dora group ride rained out. :(

It looks like we’ve got some rain in the forecast over the holiday weekend! Good, we really need it, and the trails always run faster after a good soaking. I’d love to go ride now, but I’m looking at about 5 hours of yard work today. Also, Lisa’s parents are coming to stay with us over the long weekend, so I won’t be able to ride again until Tuesday at the earliest. Hopefully a few… [Read more]

Garmin Edge 500: first ride; Unleashed dog, trail sabotage. O, hai there lil' fella!

Yesterday morning I rode at the Mt. Dora Mountain bike trails, and I was excited to see how my new (see yesterday’s blog) performed out in the woods. First–and most importantly–I was very happy with the GPS performance of the Edge 500. Even out in the woods the Edge kept a solid lock on the satellites, providing a very good GPS resolution of about 11 feet. When I used the Strava Android app, segment matching… [Read more]

Guess what Lisa bought me for our Anniversary? The Garmin Edge 500 - Premium Red Edition stem mounted on my Fuel.

Lisa and I decided to get joint bank accounts when we started living together back in 1992 (two years before we were married). Doing so was a smart choice because we learned very early in our relationship to think of money and assets as “ours” and not “mine and yours”. Back then we didn’t have much, but we really liked the feeling of being a single financial team. Because of this early choice Lisa and… [Read more]

By request: Wedding photo; 4 new PRs set yesterday! Lisa and I, just moments after our saying our vows eighteen years ago. May 21, 1994.

In yesterday’s blog I talked a bit about life after 18 years of marriage. Lisa and I would like to thank everyone who offered their congratulations! There were a couple of requests in the comments section for a wedding photo, and so I’ve included one here. Not too long before the wedding I cut all my hair off, and I remember still feeling really uncomfortable with short hair. Looking at this photo again, I swear… [Read more]

A few thoughts on life after 18 years of marriage; AtLarge 15% off sale!

So yesterday Lisa and I celebrated 18 years of marriage! I still remember our wedding day back in 1994 like it was yesterday, so it’s hard to believe it’s already been 18 years. Lisa and I started dating in late 1989, and so we’ve actually been together for more than 22 years now. 22 years… man, that’s more than half of my life! A lot happens in 22 years. John Stone Fitness came about in… [Read more]
