So yesterday Lisa and I celebrated 18 years of marriage! I still remember our wedding day back in 1994 like it was yesterday, so it’s hard to believe it’s already been 18 years. Lisa and I started dating in late 1989, and so we’ve actually been together for more than 22 years now.

22 years… man, that’s more than half of my life!

A lot happens in 22 years. John Stone Fitness came about in 2003, and so this site has been around for almost 10 of those years. Those of you who have been visiting the site since the beginning have witnessed many of the changes in my life (and not just the obvious, physical changes). I’m not the same person I was when I started this site 10 years ago, and I’m certainly not the same person I was 22 years ago. Nor is Lisa. While Lisa and I have both changed a lot over the years, we still have an incredible amount in common.

It’s not always been easy. Lisa and I are fortunate to have a good marriage, but no one gets to 18 years without working at it. Over the years there’s been good and there’s been bad. We’ve had some amazing times together, and some horrible fights.

I only mention all of this because nothing in life worth having ever comes easy. I don’t care if it’s your job, marriage, body, relationships, health… whatever it is you want out of life, you’ve got to work at it. So many people today are quick to give up on things. It seems to me most people these days want instant gratification, fast results and all the rewards with none of the hardships. Life doesn’t work that way, and I think that’s why so many people are constantly unhappy.

Thinking back over the past 43+ years of my life, the times I’ve been the happiest are the times when I’ve worked the hardest. It’s a strange facet of human behavior that we often resist the things that will bring us true satisfaction in our lives. I know people who I honestly believe are afraid to be happy.

On a less serious note, last night I decided that I wanted to prepare our celebration dinner myself, as I think that’s a lot more personal than going out to eat. It was definitely a splurge meal. I grilled a couple of beautiful New York Strips to perfection and served them with steamed red potatoes in a chopped garlic, fresh dill and butter sauce. I also made a batch of whipped butter with EVOO, fresh garlic and parsley from our gardens, which we spread on warm, freshly baked Ciabatta bread. I put a little whipped butter on top of the steak as I pulled them off the grill. We also opened a good bottle of red wine, and toasted an amazing 18 years of marriage, and to the next 18. 🙂

  1. Congrat man, wow. I’m celebrating 4 years this summer, and THAT seems like a long time…can’t imagine what 18 feels like.

So, how about a wedding picture to mark the day? 🙂
