Soggy, but enjoyable, weekend; So many peppers!

We had a very nice Memorial day weekend with family. I didn’t do a lick of exercise, and I had TWO splurge meals: Fajitas on Sunday, and pizza last night. Last night’s pizza was cheese pizza with some fresh chopped garlic and rosemary, tomato and basil from our gardens. I may have also had some garlic bread. 😀

I really need to get on the bike, but this morning it’s still raining. I may just have to bite the bullet and go ride in the rain. If I decide I don’t feel like riding in the rain I’ll at least get on the recumbent bike in my gym and get an hour or so in. I enjoyed my time off, but I’m really in the mood to ride!

These are some of the peppers we gave to Lisa's parents. In this shot are serrano, hot banana and sweet snacking peppers.

All the the peppers, vegetables, tomatoes, herbs and fruits are doing exceptionally well. The automatic irrigation system I installed earlier this year has proven to be invaluable! I’ve always been pretty good about watering our edibles, but now everything gets precisely the correct amount of water at the perfect times of day without fail. The irrigation system has taken our yields from “very good” to “outstanding”.

Yesterday we harvested all sorts of different peppers and herbs and gave them to Lisa’s parents. When we planted this year’s crop we based it on last year’s yields, and we simply didn’t expect the sheer number peppers that we’re getting now. Proper watering, along with regular fertilization, is key.

These are just two of the 15 peppers and herb plants we have going. Look at all those peppers!

By the way, I use “Bonnie Herb and Vegetable 8-4-4 Plant Food”, which is an all-natural liquid fertilizer. I would never use any chemical-based products on the foods I’m growing, and the Bonnie plant food is made from natural seed extract and contains no chemicals. In fact, it’s so safe you can literally harvest on the same day that you use it. It’s all I use on my edibles, and I highly recommend it. One bottle makes around 64 gallons of food, so it’s also very economical. You should be able to find it at your local Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Alright, I just walked out back and it’s raining even harder now than it was when I woke up. Sometimes I like to ride in the rain (for example, check out this video I made), but I’m just not in the mood to ride in that this morning. I guess I’d better go dust off the recumbent bike, because I need to get some form of exercise in or I’m going to go crazy!

  1. Those peppers look amazing!

Would it be possible for maybe a little more info specifically on the auto-watering of the edibles? I clicked back to the blog from May 1st and read again, but the bit on the edibles was just the photo of the manifold with the timer and then the fact that they now get auto watered once per day (and some twice). How does the timer know which get once-a-day watering and which twice, cause it looks like there is just one water supply leaving the timer? And what’s on the other end of the water supply at the edibles, just an open hose?

Just very curious, that’s all. 🙂

    • Hey Dan, you’re right–I didn’t go into much detail on the auto-irrigation system that blog I linked to. I forgot that I talked about that project on Facebook, but I never really did create a blog on this site detailing it. I’ll do that tomorrow, so stay tuned! 🙂

      • Sweet, thanks!

Yeah, I guess I’m part of the seemingly very small world minority who is still Facebook-less. My wife handles that side of our social networking lives enough for the two of us. 🙂
