Strava is changing the way I ride; Garmin Edge 500. Garmin Edge 500. Want.

Since I started using Strava I’ve noticed that I’m riding shorter distances, but I’m riding much harder and with fewer breaks. For example, yesterday I rode at Wekiwa and I did something I’ve never done before: I rode the entire “Bike Loop” like it was a cross-country mountain bike race. Normally when I ride this particular route I stop to rest a couple of times–generally after each timed section (called “segments” on Strava). Yesterday I… [Read more]

Eating healthy; Breakfast; I love growing my own food! This morning I chopped up sweet peppers, a serrano pepper and some green onion.

I’ve talked about breakfast quite a few times in my blogs, and that’s because it’s such an important meal. Unfortunately breakfast is a meal that many people skip, and I think that’s a huge mistake. Eating a healthy, well-balanced breakfast gives you the fuel you need to get the day off to a great start. Don’t skip it! As most of you know, I eat the same breakfast almost every morning: egg whites, roasted red… [Read more]

New Recipe: Brown Sugar-Glazed Salmon with Sweet Pepper Brown Sugar Glazed Salmon with Sweet Pepper

Last night I knew I was going to prepare salmon for dinner, and originally I was going to whip up one of my favorite salmon recipes, Broiled Salmon with Mustard & Dill. As dinner time approached, however, I realized that I had a little bit of a sweet tooth and was also in the mood to try something new. I decided to hunt down a salmon recipe with some sort of a sweet glaze on… [Read more]

Terrible ride yesterday; Scale weight down again; The heat is on. I've been breaking these out a lot the past few weeks.

I was feeling tired from Sunday’s 9 mile all-out mountain biking sprint, but yesterday morning I decided to head over to Mt. Dora to get a ride in. I really should have listened to my body and took a day off: my cardio felt way off, my legs felt like rubber and I was riding poorly. I turned in my 2nd best times on two sections of trail, but the perceived effort I put out… [Read more]

7 Strava segments defined at Wekiwa; 5 new PRs set yesterday. The ~7.8 mile "Bike Loop".

Yesterday I went back over to Wekiwa to complete the project of establishing mountain biking segments on Strava. Thankfully I didn’t have any major GPS issues this time, and I have now established segments for most of the trails I ride regularly out there. Here’s the segment that I named “The Bike Loop“. This is a ~7.5 mile loop that starts at the Sand Lake trailhead and follows the Red blaze (bike) trails back around… [Read more]

Excellent ride yesterday, but GPS let me down. GPS is awesome, but not perfect.

Even though I was feeling a little under the weather yesterday morning, I decided to head over to Wekiwa to do some mountain biking. I was excited about creating the very first Wekiwa segments on Strava, as there are presently none defined. A “segment” is essentially a defined section of trail that allows cyclists (and runners) to be ranked against their own previous efforts as well as all other athletes who have covered the same… [Read more]

The first of the Poblanos are ready to harvest; Riding this morning. Look at all these Poblano peppers!

One of my favorite splurge meals is a slight variation on Bobby Flay’s amazing Santa Fe Burger. I make this burger with lean ground beef, blue corn tortilla chips, pepper jack cheese and poblano peppers roasted with olive oil, salt & pepper. I usually serve the burger with roasted red potatoes. As splurge meals go, this one is far from over the top, but it’s incredibly delicious. Because we love this burger so much, this… [Read more]

Front brakes screaming like a banshee; Weight training today. I don't like riding with her.

Remember this past Saturday’s blog about how I used my home shop to modify a brake caliper mounting bracket? I was pretty proud of myself because I reduced the existing bracket by precisely 2.5mm, and the rotor and pad were perfectly aligned. Perfectly aligned on one plane, that is. I probably should have trail-tested the brakes before patting myself on the back. When I rode on Tuesday my front brakes were howling and squealing like… [Read more]
