I harvested about four pounds of tomatoes on Sunday, and so last night I decided to make my homemade authentic Italian marinara sauce.

The last time I made this sauce was after big tomato harvest in May 2011. This is one of those sauces that simply must be prepared using fresh tomatoes. I guess you could use canned tomatoes, but there really is no comparison to using fresh.

Also, I’ve found that there is a very noticeable difference between the tomatoes I grow myself and those purchased from the grocery store. The store bought tomatoes are good, but nowhere nearly as sweet and flavorful as those I’ve grown myself. For fun I’ve done blind taste tests between store bought and home grown and the difference is staggeringly easy to taste. If you’re not growing your own tomatoes, perhaps try a local farmer’s market instead of the grocery store. The taste difference is worth the extra trouble.

I slow cooked the sauce for about 3 hours, and didn’t depart from my recipe much (I also added some fresh chopped parsley from our garden). The sauce came out incredibly good, even better than last year.

I think special meals taste even better when they are prepared with family and friends, and are a part of a larger event. For example, something fun Lisa and I love to do is work on this sauce together, and then have it slowly simmering in the background while we watch “The Godfather” or “Goodfellas”. 🙂

The sauce recipe is not difficult to make, and the taste will blow you away. Definitely give this one a try, and make it a splurge meal: don’t forget the fresh baked bread and olive oil!
