In Tuesday’s blog I took a photograph of a fairly large harvest of tomatoes, some of which I made into an amazing marinara sauce. The tomatoes have been coming off the vine in record numbers this year, and so have the peppers.
We cut some ripe peppers the other day, and they taste even better than they look! I’ve been using the peppers in salads, egg whites, chili, grilled and served over chicken or hamburgers, soft chicken tacos, fajitas and much more. In the photo to the right there are serrano peppers, sweet snacking peppers, a red bell pepper, hot chili peppers and hot banana peppers. We’ve also got jalapeno peppers and poblano peppers, but they are not pictured in this photograph. Actually last night I pulled off three gorgeous poblano peppers and then I roasted them with a little vegetable oil, salt and pepper in our new Breville convection oven. They were amazing!
The so-called “hot” banana peppers and “hot” chili peppers are actually extremely mild. Those two peppers, along with the delicious sweet snacking peppers, work well in salads and also roasted or grilled.
The only two peppers we’re growing that have any kind of real bite are the jalapenos and the serranos. I like spicy food a lot, and I think I’m going to add a couple peppers a little further up on the Scoville scale: habaneros and Thai chilis. 🙂
When I was younger (early 20s) I ate an entire Thai chili pepper on a dare from Lisa’s dad. He has it on video tape somewhere. I need to try to get that footage and digitize it, it’s hilarious. I was in Quite. A. Lot. Of. Pain.
In other news, it’s still raining. This has been one really soggy week. I’m not complaining, as we really need the rain. Mountain biking anywhere but Wekiwa is out until things dry off, as the more technical trails should not be ridden when it’s this wet (doing so damages the trails). I really need to do the yard work today, and I’m hoping for a break in the rain so I can get that done.
I’ll be taking a week off this month. My vacation will start on Saturday, June 16th and run through Sunday, June 24th. There will be no blogs or updates to this site during my vacation. My daily blog will resume on Monday, June 25th.
