By the time my vacation was over, I was feeling noticeably lethargic and less than 100%. When I say “less than 100%”, I don’t mean I was feeling sick, just… weak, I suppose. Part of the reason for that feeling is because I sat on my butt for a week, but I think the major reason was my sloppy diet. I don’t care what your goals are, diet is everything.
A quote that I see thrown around a lot is, “You can’t out train a poor diet.” Truer words have never been spoken. Whenever someone complains to me that they can’t lose fat, 99.9% of the time the problem is his or her diet.
For example, I’ve seen the same overweight men and women walking and running in my neighborhood for several years now. While I commend their dedication to physical activity, they will never lose fat until they fix their diets. How many people do you know say something like, “I walked 6 miles today, I sure earned a pizza!” Those are the same people who also lament, “I don’t get it, I exercise every day and I can’t lose weight!” Sorry, the ~300 calories you burned power walking a few miles won’t even cover the first slice of peperoni pizza.
Can’t lose fat? Clean up your diet! Still can’t lose fat? Two possible problems:
1) Your diet is not nearly as clean as you think it is (I can’t even begin to tell you how many people fall into this category).
– and/or –
2) You’re still eating too much.
Anyway, after a week of mostly junk food, my body was crying out for the foods that make me feel great. I don’t think I ever enjoyed plain old grilled chicken breast and brown rice more than I did for lunch yesterday. In fact, when dinner time rolled around all I wanted was another chicken breast and some more brown rice, and so that’s what I had. The rest of my diet yesterday was, of course, very clean. I also drank about 1.5 gallons of water. I’m already craving my chicken breast, rice and salad for today’s lunch. 🙂
The rain is continuing to fall, and it’s not going to be letting up anytime soon. There will be no mountain biking this week. 🙁 In yesterday’s blog I said that I was going to do some form of physical activity every day this week, and it looks like all of that exercise is going to be completely indoors. I’m going to do a leg workout this week, and also an upper body workout. The rest of the exercise will be cardio on the recumbent bike. I’ll probably do a mix of LISS, HIIT and maybe an extended medium-high intensity ride later in the week. Yesterday I did a fasted 45-minute LISS session, and I felt pretty good. It was nice to work up a sweat for the first time in almost a week!
I have a busy day ahead of me (I’m still playing catch-up at work), and I don’t want to take a chance that I won’t be able to hit the gym this afternoon. I’m going to go ahead and do another LISS session on the recumbent bike this morning before work.
