2012 maintenance weekly progress report: week #28 Myotape

Week #28 of my 2012 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. My scale weight this morning (as measured by the ) is 170.2 pounds. That’s a -2.8 pound change since last week’s weight of 173.0 pounds, and a 1.4 pound loss to my 2012 end-of-cut weight of 171.6 pounds. My 7-point body fat reading this morning (as measured by the is 5.8%. That’s a -0.8% body fat change since… [Read more]

Quick early blog, heading out to Haile’s Trails for the group ride. One of the rock gardens at Haile's Trails. The deep rock quarry the trails are built on, and around, can be seen at far right.

The trails I’ll be riding today (see the second half of Wednesday’s blog for more information) are located in Gainesville, Florida, and that’s about a 2+ hour drive. I think the drive will be well worth it, as “Haile’s Trails” are known to be fun but extremely challenging. Open to the public just two times per year, the rare opportunity to ride these trails is not something to pass up. Mike Simmons and I will… [Read more]

Weight training yesterday, ride today; Increased miles on the bike. My heart rate has averaged 161 BPM for more than 27 hours over the past 30 days. Estimated calories burned is about 20,000!

Yesterday I decided to get a weight training workout in instead of riding. Last week I went heavy, and so this week I decided to go with more moderate weights and get the intensity level up. It wasn’t a terribly high volume workout–I don’t want to be sore or fatigued for the Haile’s Trails group ride on Saturday–but it was a good workout. This morning I can definitely tell I lifted, but I don’t think… [Read more]

New shared “Legs of Stone Challenge” record set yesterday! I sent Mike a text yesterday morning, and the stage was set: we finally rode the "Legs of Stone Challenge" together.

With the Hailes Trails group ride coming up on Saturday, I figured yesterday was my last chance to get a really hard mountain bike workout in before the big day. The idea was to kill it yesterday, get a recovery ride in today and then do a weight training workout on Friday. Plenty of biking, but fresh legs for the group ride. I thought it would be cool if Mike Simmons and I finally rode… [Read more]

Strava is a butthole; Rare treat this weekend: Haile’s Trails! Haile's Trails are built around an old rock quarry and are open to the public just two times per year. This is as close as we get to mountains in Florida.

Let me repeat that: Strava is a butthole. Yesterday Mike Simmons and I rode at Mt. Dora, and we both got robbed. Mike was the first one to get the Stravashaft on the “Gravity Destroyer Downhill” segment. On this segment Mike and I have shared the KOM since July with a tie of 2m30s. Earlier this week Mark Pettengill went out and did some excellent work to improve a couple of sketchy areas on Gravity… [Read more]

Ribs are hurting this morning; Twister! Bruised ribs are pretty painful.

That stupid little fall onto a rock at Santos on Saturday sure did a number on my ribs. The ribs just to the left of my left pectoral muscle are pretty bruised up. Breathing deeply and moving in certain ways is pretty painful. I don’t think the injury is quite as bad as the time I bruised my ribs at the Chuck Lennon trails, so that’s good. As annoying as the pain is, it’s almost… [Read more]

Excellent ride at Santos on Saturday (video)! Sport Bean break!

I drove up to the Santos mountain bike park on Saturday morning to meet with Mike Simmons, who was camping there with his family. We wound up doing about 18 miles: a nice blend of technical riding interspersed with a few fast and flowing trails where we were able to open up the throttle a bit. Mike said the rain came down on the trails hard Friday night, but thankfully on Saturday morning the trails… [Read more]

Heading to Santos this morning; Sunglasses always fogging up–solution? One of the many rocky sections at Santos (not my photo).

This morning I’m heading out to Santos MTB park and meeting up with my friend Mike, who is taking a long weekend to camp there. I think my friend Andrew and some of his riding crew will be there, too, and I’m sure we’ll run into some other riders we know. Can’t wait! No plans for the ride are set in, um… stone (see what I did there?), but I’m pretty sure we’re going to… [Read more]

Yesterday’s weight training workout; Lower back pain? Try direct ab work. Ab rollouts make traditional crunches feel like angel kisses.

Instead of riding I decided to get a weight training workout in yesterday. Lately I’ve been doing very high intensity weight training workouts: moderate weights, medium to high reps (12-20 reps per set), short rest intervals (45-60 seconds between sets) and intensity techniques such as supersets, drop sets, giant sets and “down the rack” sets. I was in the mood to switch things up a bit for yesterday’s workout, so I went with very heavy… [Read more]
