Group ride: The big dogs are running tonight at Mt. Dora.
Last night on Facebook Mike Simmons shared his latest Strava ride at Mt. Dora, and that sparked an interesting discussion. Mike rode the Gravity Destroyer up/down and Florida Flow Loop segment with a solid time of 8m31, beating my time of 8m36s and taking the KOM back from me. Great ride, Mike!
Local racing badass Donnie Harries commented on Mike’s ride, and eventually the conversation turned to wondering when Donnie was going to come down here to ride Mt. Dora.
Donnie is a very well-known and well-respected local rider–not just for his XC racing prowess (look for him on the podium in just about every race he enters), but also because he pretty much owns Santos on Strava.
Santos, for those of you who don’t know, is the largest and one of the most popular (the most popular?) mountain bike destinations in the state of Florida. Because the park is so highly trafficked, obtaining even one KOM at Santos is a HUGE accomplishment. Donnie, at last count, owns 16 KOMs at Santos. Donnie’s work ethic and dedication are both admirable and inspiring: he mountain bikes every single day without fail.
So, it looks like a group ride is coming together tonight at Mt. Dora! Along with Donnie several other well-known and extremely strong local riders will probably be there, including Mark Pettengill, Ted Hollander, Mike Simmons and Jim Beyer. We plan to roll out at about 5:30 PM, and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun.
I’m looking forward to riding with these monsters, even if I will probably be choking on their dust most of the time. Riding with better riders is one of the best ways to improve, so this is going to be a fun, inspiring and educational ride for me.
I expect to see a lot of movement on Strava after this ride.
Hope to see some of you other locals at the trailhead tonight!
