I really disliked the white cork bar tape that came on my new Madone, and so I decided to replace it with some higher quality tape from Fizik. I bought Fizik dual tape (black and blue). This tape can be installed in two different ways: the way I did it, black with subtle blue stitching, or the “candy cane” look, which I really do not care for at all.
This was my first bar tape install, and I found it a little bit tricky at first. I took my time, wrapped the tape nice and tight and paid careful attention to the spacing. If things didn’t look quite right I backed the tape off and did it again. The second bar went much faster than the first bar.
I’m really happy with how the new bar tape looks; even more importantly, I love how it feels.
For yesterday’s training I did the second workout in the 6-week Intermediate Base I plan I’m following on TrainerRoad (see yesterday’s blog for my full TrainerRoad review). The workout (“Gayley”) is a 60 minute workout with four 8-minute sets at Functional Threshold (FT). You can check out the stats and graphs from my actual workout here.
I gave the stock saddle on my Madone a fair shake, but I can’t take another mile on it. Honestly, the hardest part of yesterday’s workout was the excruciating pain the saddle was causing me. It’s not a bad saddle, it just doesn’t fit me correctly. I have a WTB Devo Carbon saddle on my Fuel mountain bike, and that saddle rocks. The Devo is considered an Elite road or XC mountain bike saddle, so I ordered another one for the Madone. The Devo is also 80g lighter than the stock saddle, so that’s good, too. It will be here today, thank goodness.
Also arriving today are my Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL pedals, which are a birthday gift from my brother. I am very much looking forward to getting these, as I’ve had to put my mountain bike’s SPD clipless pedals on my road bike and ride with my mountain bike shoes! With the new road bike pedals I’ll be able to use my Shimano SH-R106L shoes (a birthday gift from Lisa!), which are much stiffer and more efficient than my mountain biking shoes.
Tonight I’ll be putting the finishing touches on my bike torture chamber. I’ve seen some very hardcore and grimy looking bike dungeons out there, but mine is pretty much the antithesis of those. My indoor cardio area may be high tech and polished in appearance, but don’t let that fool you: the suffering in there will downright medieval. I expect to have a complete write-up with pictures in tomorrow’s blog.
