November is behind us, and what an exciting month of cycling progress it was for me!

I set numerous personal records, including:

  • Total distance cycled in one month: 885.686 Kilometers / 550.34 miles (Average 29.523 Kilometers / 18.344 miles per day)
  • Total calories burned cycling in one month (Source Garmin Connect): 22,278 (742.6 calories/day)
  • Longest road ride: 100.3 Kilometers / 62.18 miles (The “We Must Be Crazy” Donut King group ride)
  • 5 second, 10 second, 20 second, 30 second, 1 minute, 2 minute, 10 minute, 15 minute, 20 minute, 30 minute, 60 minute and 90 minute power/watt records (source TrainerRoad)
  • Functional Threshold Power (FTP): 280 FTP (source TrainerRoad)
  • FTP/Kg: 3.70 (source TrainerRoad)

In addition to those PRs, I also set quite a few new time personal records on the roads and out on the trails. The most satisfying of those were my drastic XC mountain biking time improvements at Wekiwa State park (7 new personal records/KOMs set on November 28, 2012), and also some fairly high Strava placements/PRs on several different road rides (a few examples can be found in my November 5, 2012 blog and my November 12, 2012 blog).

Even though I made some very nice progress over the past month, I still have a whole lot of work ahead of me. My training is going well, but I’m still in the early stages: things are going to get real tough over the next few months!

The early improvements I’ve seen since I started getting serious about my cycling training are very encouraging to me, but I know that I’m nowhere near my full potential. I’m incredibly inspired by some of the monsters I’ve been riding with and following on Strava. I’m a very competitive person, and so when I see how good some of these guys are it makes me want to be that good. I am going to keep working my butt off and training hard until I am.

I’ve decided not to set a December mileage goal. I’m afraid if I focus too much on my total miles then I may start sacrificing quality for quantity. I don’t want to be in a position where I pass up an awesome 25 mile mountain bike ride because I feel compelled to get a longer 60 mile road ride in to meet my mileage goal. That said, I’m sure I’m going to ride a whole lot of miles in December, and many of those miles are going to be hard training miles.

I’ll be starting the next 6-week training plan on TrainerRoad next week. The first workout of the new program will be a re-test of my FTP, and I’m pretty stoked to see how much improvement I’ve made since I tested it about six weeks ago. I am hoping to score higher than 300.
