Vacation damage report.

Slight exaggeration.

Slight exaggeration.

While I was on my 2-week holiday I completely relaxed my diet and ate pretty much whatever I wanted to eat. This sloppy diet included all the usual suspects: movie theater popcorn, pizza, pork barbeque, cheeseburgers, french fries, steak and so on. I may have also had some chocolate, cookies, and pie. Oh, and ice cream.

Compounding my sloppy vacation diet, my activity level was greatly reduced. During my two week vacation I only cycled a grand total of 94.4 miles.

I didn’t take any measurements while I was off, but I sort of kept one eye on the scale so I wouldn’t be too shocked this morning.

I just took a complete set of soft tape measurements, a 7-point body fat reading and my scale weight. Since today’s blog is titled “Vacation damage report”, I’ll be comparing this morning’s stats to my December 16, 2012 stats (the last set of measurements I took before my vacation). After today, this morning’s measurements will serve as my 2013 baseline stats, and so my weekly Sunday progress reports will be compared to these measurements for the rest of the year.

My scale weight this morning (as measured by the EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale) is 174.4 pounds. That’s a 7.2 pound gain since December 16, 2012’s weight of 167.2 pounds.

Ouch!

My 7-point body fat reading this morning (as measured by the FatTrack PRO Digital Body Fat Caliper is 7.2%. That’s a +2.2% body fat change since December 16, 2012’s body fat measurement of 5.0%.

Double ouch!

Using my scale weight along with my body fat reading I can easily calculate how much of my weight change was fat, and how much was lean mass (note: JSF BodyShop™ makes these calculations for you automatically). Since December 16, 2012 I’ve gained 4.2 pounds of fat and gained 3.0 pounds of lean mass.

My tape measurements (as measured by the MyoTape) show that since December 16, 2012 I’ve added three-quarters of an inch to my waist (currently 30.75″), a half-inch to my hips (currently 36.5″) and a half-inch to my quads (currently 21.5″). My detailed stats (including all tape measurements) can always be found on JSF BodyShop™. Just create a free account (existing JSF Forum members should simply log in using their forum username and password) and search for me.

OK, so that’s not too bad. The 3 pounds of lean mass is just water weight, and will be gone after a couple of days of clean eating. I can easily lose 4.2 pounds of fat with just 2-3 weeks of eating clean and training hard. I’ll be back to where I was in every respect in just a couple of weeks.

Was it worth it? Heck yeah it was. I was feeling burned out, and I needed a break–bad. While I have a little ground to make up, mentally and physically I feel recharged.

I made excellent training progress the last few months of 2012, but that was just the beginning. I’m going to take my training to the next level, and that starts today!

  1. You give 110% John, even when you splurge! I thought my gain of 3 lbs in a week was bad but you out did me. On a positive note, like you said, it will come off quickly, I dropped all of it (and then some) in my first week back eating clean, just make sure you lift the toilet seat in your 50 trips to the bathroom over the next few days.
