Short, but intense, 27 mile ride yesterday; Few new PRs. Yesterday's route.

I really should have taken yesterday off from riding. On Wednesday I was already feeling like I was right on the edge of over-training, but I did a pretty tough Sufferfest workout anyway. Yesterday morning, everything from my legs to my energy level was saying “REST!” I was really in the mood to ride, however, so I decided that I’d compromise and do a short ~30 mile road ride. When I left the house I… [Read more]

New “Favorite Things” Item: K-Edge Cycling Computer Mount Close-up of my Garmin Edge 500 on the K-edge mount.

When I posted some pictures of my Madone’s newly slammed stem (see yesterday’s blog: “Flip it and slam it: discussion and how-to guide“), JSF member and fellow cyclist Devery Andrews noticed that I was still using the stock mount. Devery asked me if I’d ever considered one of the several aftermarket Garmin mounts that are available, and mentioned a few by name: the , the and the . I always thought the stock Garmin mount… [Read more]

Flip it and slam it: discussion and how-to guide. Flipped and slammed: close shot.

Hopefully the title of today’s blog has you excited! You’ll have to pardon the double entendre, the obnoxious teenager that still lives within me couldn’t resist. Besides, your first thought came from you, not me. So, to the disappointment of at least some of you (and the relief of others), my blog will remain G-rated. Today we’re going to look at the practice of “slamming the stem”. “Slamming the stem” is, simply put, lowering a… [Read more]

Did another 100 KM ride yesterday; Major fitness improvements. Scenic view on yesterday's ride.

The weather was so beautiful yesterday morning that I could not resist taking the day off. I have some unused personal days, which I save precisely for days like yesterday. I notified work that I was taking a sanity day (“You’d have to be insane to not go outside on a day like this!“), grabbed my Madone and headed out… I was in the mood for a long ride, and so I decided that I… [Read more]

Lisa cooked for us! New recipe: Apple Butter & Chipotle Chicken. Apple Butter & Chipotle Chicken

My goodness, it’s another amazing morning here in Central Florida! I was starting to think we skipped spring and went right to summer, but these past couple of days have brought us a nice–but certainly brief–taste of a season we generally don’t see much of here in the subtropics. Speaking of taste, this morning I’ve got a new recipe for you all! Lisa made this dish for me about a month or so ago, and… [Read more]

Excellent week last week: numerous PRs for distance, speed, time and more. Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day for a ride!

My plan yesterday was to do an indoor training session, and I was 99% sure it was going to be the relatively lengthy “Local Hero” Sufferfest workout. Once I got my first glimpse of the weather, however, my plans changed in an instant. After a week of pretty much non-stop rain (which we desperately needed), yesterday’s incredible weather made it virtually impossible to stay indoors. It was clear, cool, sunny and very windy. I’ve been… [Read more]

Good 46 mile ride yesterday; Local paved trails; Weekly distance PR to fall? At the halfway point of yesterday's ride. This is lake Minneola, which has white sand beaches.

I’m not entirely sure why, but I’ve been in a roadie mood lately. I consider myself mostly a mountain biker, but sometimes I go through phases when road riding sounds more appealing. I think part of the reason I’ve been doing mostly road riding lately is because I’m trying to increase my saddle time and mileage. I’ve mentioned in this blog a few times that I am not at all comfortable cycling on busy public… [Read more]
