On vacation: Ducktown here we come!

The last time I actually had a real vacation was the JSF cruise to the Bahamas back in August 2008–and that was more like a long weekend. We did pack a lot of fun into those 3 or 4 days, though. Man, that was a good time… Anyway, it’s been five years since I was able to really get away from everything. As most of you know, I’ll be heading up to Tennessee with a… [Read more]

Lower average heart rate after big rides; Bike maintenance and repair. My home bike shop, August 29, 2013.

It seems like every time I do a long mountain bike ride (40+ miles), my average heart rate while performing subsequent rides goes way down. I’ve noted this phenomenon in past blogs, and I’ve seen it again this week. For example, on Sunday I did the 42-mile IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) “EPIC” ride at Santos. That was more than 4 hours of non-stop pedaling, and my average heart rate over those 4+ hours was… [Read more]

Initial thoughts on the SIDI Dominator 5 MTB shoes SIDI Genius 5 Pro Carbon Road Cycling shoe on left, SIDI Dominator 5 MTB shoe on right.

In Saturday’s blog I posted a photograph of my tired Pearl iZUMi MTB shoes, which are literally falling apart. I knew I was heading to Santos on Sunday for the 42-mile IMBA “EPIC” ride, and I thought that would be a perfect ride on which to test a new pair of shoes before the Black Bear Rampage. My road cycling shoe is the , and I absolutely love it. I decided to head over to… [Read more]

Bought an air mattress for the Black Bear Rampage. Intex Pillow Rest Raised Air Mattress

Last Friday I talked about the yurts we’ll be staying in while we’re in Tennessee for the Black Bear Rampage mountain bike race. If you watched the video I posted in that blog, then you know that the yurts have electricity, air conditioning and heating. The yurts are not exactly hotel rooms (nor are they designed to be), but I’m told they are quite comfortable. They seem like a perfect balance between creature comforts and… [Read more]

Did the 42-mile “Epic” at Santos yesterday; AtLarge 1-day 30% off sale! Mike's Ibis Mojo and my Trek Fuel EX 8 after the ride.

The 42-mile IMBA “EPIC” MTB route at the Santos MTB park is always a fun and challenging ride. Yesterday Mike and I decided to tackle this ride again, as we needed some real saddle time in the dirt–the Black Bear Rampage is less than two weeks away. We like to do this route starting from the Landbridge trailhead. The Landbridge trailhead is situated more or less in the middle of the EPIC route: about 24… [Read more]

I need to get new MTB shoes today. My Pearl iZUMi X-Alp Enduro II Mountain Bike Shoes after 2 years of mountain biking. They are done.

My trusty Pearl iZUMi X-Alp Enduro II Mountain biking shoes provided me with two years of excellent service, but they have reached the end of their life. The shoes are literally falling apart, and I really don’t want to be 30 miles into the Black Bear Rampage when these smelly old things finally supernova. Just look at them…   Honestly, I really should have junked these shoes six months ago, but I have been holding… [Read more]

The Black Bear cometh; What is a yurt?; Vacation announcement. One of the Ocoee Yurt Company's yurts.

The Black Bear Rampage MTB race is less than two weeks away, and I’m very excited about heading up to Tennessee to ride my mountain bike with some great friends! It’s not just the race I’m looking forward to: we’re going up early so we can relax and shred some of the other local trails. Of course we’ll be drinking plenty of tasty beer and chowing down on some excellent food, too. ๐Ÿ™‚ Something else… [Read more]

New road tires: Continental Grand Prix 4000 S Continental Grand Prix 4000 S Road Tires, 700x23

I know I said that I was going to try and post the 2013 Madone photo album with details on all the components early this week, but I decided to wait for my new tires to come in before doing the wide shots. I have already taken all of the close-up component photos, and now that the tires are here I’m going to try to get the last couple photos done. I should have the… [Read more]
