CamelBak Podium Big Chill: leak-free, but there’s a trick to that.

Last night most of our water bottles (the awesome CamelBak Podium Big Chill, which is on my Favorite Things list) were on the kitchen counter and, because I’m a complete goof, I snapped a picture. Actually I’m a mega-goof, because I then proceeded to post the photo on Facebook.

I took a picture of my water bottles last night. I don't know why.

I took a picture of my water bottles last night. I don’t know why.

Funny thing is, a valid concern came up after I posted the picture. Jason H. wrote, “I started to buy one a while back but there are a lot of negative reviews about an issue with the lid leaking. No experience with that?

The lids on these bottles are excellent and leak-free when properly screwed on, but there is a little trick to that. I just sort of worked this technique out on my own the first time I got a few drops of water down my shirt.

Because the valve on the Podium Big Chill is designed to keep liquids from spilling, simply screwing the lid down will trap some air in there, and this air pressure prevents a perfectly tight seal. The trick is to gently squeeze the bottle a few times as you tighten the lid, burping the air out. This technique will allow the lid to fully seal each and every time. I do this without even thinking about it now, and the bottles never leak. The first bottle I bought still works as perfectly as the newest bottle.

These really are the best water bottles I’ve ever seen. Lisa loves them, too, and because they are so easy to transport without leaking she’s able to take plenty of water to work now.

Happy Friday!
