I need to get new MTB shoes today.

My trusty Pearl iZUMi X-Alp Enduro II Mountain biking shoes provided me with two years of excellent service, but they have reached the end of their life.

The shoes are literally falling apart, and I really don’t want to be 30 miles into the Black Bear Rampage when these smelly old things finally supernova. Just look at them…

Honestly, I really should have junked these shoes six months ago, but I have been holding out for Pearl iZUMi’s X-Project shoe, which was announced (along with a great deal of hype) at last year’s Interbike. The X-Project shoe looked like it was going to be pretty amazing: extremely light and stiff, but still quite good for the occasional hike-a-bike.

The latest information I’ve seen is January 2014 for the upper-end 1.0 model, but I can’t wait until then (and that’s assuming Pearl even makes that date). And that new color scheme… ugh. Not for me.

Anyway, after a full year of missed ship dates, I’ve given up on the X-Project shoe–at least for now.

So, what to get? I have not made up my mind. I’m going to hit up the LBS today and decide there. I absolutely love my SIDI Genius 5 road cycling shoes, so the MTB counterpart to the Genius 5–the SIDI Dominator 5–is at the top of a very short list.

More on Monday… right now I need to RIDE! 🙂

  1. Your old PIs look nice, but were they a full on race shoe? They kinda look comfort/commuter oriented ( but def. higher end).

Those Sidis are a great full on race shoe, and is what you should be in anyway. Hope they work out for you! And good luck in Tennessee! Rip em up!

I’m upping the mileage substantially this week since Aneta and the girls are, oddly enough, in Florida (Satellite Beach and Orlando) visiting friends.

    • The PIs were great Hike-A-Bike shoes, which was perfect for me when I bought them. Back then I used to take my DSLR out on MTB rides a lot, especially at Wekiwa, and would combine photography with my riding. So the PIs made a lot of sense then.

But yeah, the SIDIs are much more appropriate for how I’m riding and training these days. I love my SIDI road shoes, and so the Dominator MTB shoe was a no-brainer. I did 42 miles in them yesterday, and apart from a little hot-spotting (had the ratchet a little too tight), they were awesome.

You’re in Orlando? Want to meet up and ride?

      • No, just the wife and kids are in FL. I’m up here in Ontario still. Since they’re gone for the week, I’ll be riding a lot more this week. If the rain clears up for 5pm, I’ll due a metric tonight (to match up with the Imperial Century I did yesterday).
