Wednesday, December 12, 2018 - Welcome, guest user!

Breaking the chains.

I have successfully maintained my scale weight and body fat percentage all year long. As I wrote in yesterday’s blog, I have done this without any special effort: no calorie counting, no specific macronutrient requirements, no restrictions on the foods I eat and no meal scheduling. This is the second year in a row that I’ve been able to truly live “free” while maintaining (in fact, actually improving) my health and fitness. As most of… [Read more]

Are you a yo-yo dieter? A few words about bodybuilding, fat loss and sustainability. Back in the day - Bulking up, about 236 pounds here.

As most of you know, I’m a creature of habit. Once I fall into a routine I find it almost effortless to maintain it. The trick, of course, is to develop and maintain good habits. A decade ago we all saw the results of what my bad habits did to me and, conversely, how developing healthy habits completely changed my life. The foundation of a healthy lifestyle must be Diet and Exercise. Cliché? Sure. But… [Read more]

2013 Ride Of the Living Dead post-ride report Pre-ride. That's Evan "Singletrack Messiah" Stalzer in the foreground. Mike Simmons and I are yacking in the background.

The Ocala Mountain Bike Association, the Ocala Bicycle Center and Greenway Bicycles sure know how to throw a party! The 4th annual Ride Of the Living Dead (ROLD) was another huge success… More than 100 mountain bikers, many in full costume, participated in this year’s ROLD. The atmosphere before, during and after the ride was fun and energetic. I saw and rode with many of my friends, and I also made some new ones. Mike… [Read more]

My first time-traveling blog; Off to the Ride of The Living Dead. I hate it when that happens.

I’m cheating. Even though this blog was published on Saturday morning, I actually wrote it at 6:30 PM on Friday evening. The reason I’ve pulled these shenanigans is because I have to be up very early tomorrow morning (er, I mean this morning) in order to make it to the Santos MTB park by 8:00 AM for the 2013 Ride of The Living Dead. I figured I’d write the blog tonight (um, I mean last… [Read more]

Cool weather is finally here! Bikes and birds. A Tufted Titmouse enjoying a peanut from our squirrel feeder.

When I stepped outside for yesterday morning’s ride I closed my eyes, breathed in deeply and smiled: a long-overdue respite from the heat. Finally. A cool breeze swirled around me as I aired up my tires. I noticed goosebumps on my arms–a welcome change from the beads of sweat that normally would already be forming. There was no need for Quick Spit anti-fog on my sunglasses. Just one 25-ounce bidon was more than enough for… [Read more]

2013 Ride Of the Living Dead is this Saturday! 2013 Ride Of the Living Dead: Saturday, October 26th!

I’m stoked about this year’s Ride Of the Living Dead (ROLD)! I did this 50 mile mountain bike ride last year, and it was a blast. I was worried that I might have a schedule conflict for this year’s ROLD, and for awhile it was looking doubtful that I would be able to attend. Thankfully everything worked out, and I’ll be riding on Saturday! The ROLD is a fun costumed (costumes are optional) mountain bike… [Read more]

Still feeling less than 100%; Replacement Zipp arrived; I am a bonehead. The only original part remaining on the crash replacement 404 Firecrest clincher is the hub, Zipp even replaced the spokes.

Yesterday morning I did a 20.5 mile ride with an average speed of 20.2 MPH and an average heart rate of 173 BPM. That’s a very high heart rate for such a relatively low speed on the route I did. My personal record average speed on that same route is 21.4 MPH, and my average heart rate was 170 BPM when I set that PR. I set that personal best just last week, so I’m… [Read more]
