Monday, December 10, 2018 - Welcome, guest user!

Yesterday was one of the laziest days I've had in ages… Ugh, I can actually hear you getting fatter.

Yesterday morning after emerging from my food-induced coma, I stumbled into the kitchen and prepared a healthy breakfast of black coffee and a massive sticky-sweet apple strudel. I resisted the strong urge to consume a second strudel. As it turns out, backing away from the extra pastry was the pinnacle of my restraint for the entire day. My “lunch” consisted of movie theater popcorn, and dinner was (of course) Thanksgiving leftovers: turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberries,… [Read more]

Incredible day yesterday spent with family.

Yesterday’s Thanksgiving celebration was amazing. We all had so much fun hanging out, chatting, eating, laughing… My job requires me to keep my phone on me in case there is a network emergency (and, in fact, there was one minor work interruption), but apart from that it was very nice to be away from my computer, Facebook, email and other distractions for almost an entire day. My Thanksgiving dinner, if I may be so bold,… [Read more]

Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Thanksgiving!

November has been a fairly rough month for me. Well, at least it seemed that way on the surface. Thanksgiving couldn’t have come at a better time. This morning as I sat here drinking my coffee, I reflected on all of the things for which I’m thankful. Instead of dwelling on the things that went wrong this month, I focused on all the stuff that went right. Turns out November wasn’t a tough month, it… [Read more]

Email: “Are you still doing TrainerRoad workouts?”

Yesterday I received an email from a JSF visitor who was wondering why I’ve not been doing any indoor TrainerRoad workouts lately. The simple answer is THE WEATHER! ๐Ÿ™‚ For many cyclists this time of year is ideal indoor training weather, but where I live the cool and somewhat drier air is a welcome change from the incredibly long, hot and humid summer months. After six or seven months during which I break into a… [Read more]

New PR set yesterday; VeloViewer for data analysis; New photos. 2013 Horrible Hundred (I'm in the Pearl iZumi jersey). \m/

I felt really good on yesterday morning’s ride; I think I’m finally fully recovered from that long and intense effort at Van Fleet. On yesterday’s ride I set a new PR (2:09) on a 1 mile segment, beating my previous best (2:18) by 9 seconds. My average speed on this slight uphill mile was 46.83 Km/h (29.1 MPH), and I had to work for it: average heart rate was 193 BPM, maximum heart rate was… [Read more]

Yard work yesterday; Garmin’s service and support is phenomenal.

I decided to give the bike a rest yesterday, and spent the day doing yard work and a couple other outdoor projects. The weather was cool, windy and overcast–a very welcome change from the norm around these here parts. While I was outside working several cyclists passed by my house and waved. As I returned the wave I had to resist the strong urge to drop my hedge trimmer, run into the house and retrieve… [Read more]

2013 maintenance weekly progress report: week #46 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #46 of my 2013 maintenance program is complete, and itโ€™s time for my weekly progress report. Continental Grand Prix 4000S Clincher Tires: 3 month review The Continental Grand Prix 4000S Clincher tire after more than 2,500 kilometers.

Three months ago I purchased a set of for my Madone. I’ve put a lot of miles on the tires over the past 90 days, and this morning I’d like to share some of my thoughts. Prior to the , I was running clinchers. I really liked the Gatorskins for their extreme resistance to punctures, but they are relatively heavy and I found them to be a little stiff/uncomfortable. Aesthetically speaking, I can’t stand the… [Read more]

Rode the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail yesterday. About to set off on my first ride of the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail. This is the Mabel trailhead.

My schedule yesterday morning was free, and I was in the mood to ride somewhere new. I’ve been wanting to get over to the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail for awhile now, and so I decided that would be perfect: “The General James A. Van Fleet State Trail is officially designated as part of Florida’s Statewide System of Greenways and Trails and is one of Florida’s most rural, paved rail-trails. Also designated as… [Read more]

I’m cutting weight in 2014…

My scale weight (as measured by the ) has hovered around the mid-to-low 170s all year long, and my body fat percentage (as measured by the is right around 7% (my last weekly stats measurement was 6.8%). I’ve mentioned this often, but it still bears repeating: digital calipers–even in well-trained hands–have a margin of error +/-3%. I get extremely consistent readings from my caliper, but there’s no doubt in my mind that those readings are… [Read more]
