Thursday, December 13, 2018 - Welcome, guest user!

January 2014 in review. January 2014 training log.

January has been a good month. I began my 2014 cut almost three weeks ago (January 13th), but I started doing daily rides on December 31st. I’ll be riding today, of course, and that means January 2014 is the first time I’ve ridden every single day without fail for a full calendar month. Even though I often didn’t have more than an hour to ride (many times I had to settle a one hour ride… [Read more]

Spicy baked chicken; Last chance for Pearl iZUMi bibs?; Free Prime trial. I picked up seven pair of these top of the line Pearl iZUMi P.R.O. bib shorts for a total of a hair over $400 (normally $1,225)!

Where I live it’s a rare day that the weather prevents me from going out back and grilling. Yesterday was one of those days. While what we’re dealing with is a far cry from what you poor souls to my north are enduring, there was no way I was going to cook outside last night in near-freezing rain blown by ~20 MPH northerly winds. I knew the evening weather was not going to be conducive… [Read more]

Titan is sold, here’s the transition plan. Another killer Titan workout in the books.

In early January I wrote a blog about the now completed X9 Evolution Hybrid home gym, and mentioned that I would be selling my Titan to make room for it (see “The X9 is coming soon; Selling my Titan“). I stated that I would not ship the Titan, and would only deliver via local pick-up. I was, therefore, quite surprised when I started receiving inquires from all over the United States. Plenty of folks, it… [Read more]

Stages power meter on 2013 Madone–clearing up the confusion. Stages Power Meter mounted on a 2013 Madone 5.2

I do not currently own a power meter, however–thanks to TrainerRoad’s excellent Virtual Power–I am able to do indoor training workouts in my Bike Torture Chamber using wattage targets based on my FTP (Functional Threshold Power). Power-based training is a significantly more effective way to train compared to using heart rate or perceived exertion as a guide. As good as TrainerRoad’s Virtual Power is (it tracks remarkably well with real power meters), obviously it can’t… [Read more]

New hot sauce; INCREDIBLE deal on Pearl iZUMi Bib Shorts Melinda's Naga Jolokia hot sauce.

As regular readers of my blog know, I very much enjoy spicy foods! While I wouldn’t consider myself a true hot sauce aficionado (there are literally entire online communities dedicated to celebrating the love of all things spicy), I am definitely a fan. One of the easiest ways to jazz up and change the flavors of the foods you eat on a regular basis is by using hot sauces. I love trying new hot sauces… [Read more]

Making good progress; More tilapia goodness last night! Spicy Lime Tilapia with Baby Spinach, Asparagus and Scallions, just before cooking.

It’s hard to believe that tomorrow wraps up the second week of my 2014 cut. Time flies when you’re focused, in the zone and kicking ass! The past couple of weeks have been very enjoyable: eating ultra-clean, training very hard every single day, 100% focus on my goals…. I love this stuff! My hard work is paying off. It looks like this has been another very productive week of fat loss. As of this morning… [Read more]

Slept incredibly well; Big training day; JSF online coaching job available. I don't really sleep with a stuffed bear. Well, not too often, anyway.

A few items of note going on this morning… First of all, yesterday evening about 30 minutes before bedtime I took (3) ZMA capsules (see yesterday’s blog, “What is ZMA, and is it a worthwhile supplement?“), along with my usual Yogi Bedtime Tea. I slept better last night than I have in a long, long time. I snoozed deeply through the entire night, not even waking to urinate… so that means I have to wash… [Read more]

What is ZMA, and is it a worthwhile supplement? ZMA - this is one of the few supplements that I feel is worthy of my money.

In my recent article, “Suplements: what I use, and my thoughts on ‘fat burners’“, and in my older (but still highly relevant) article “My take on supplements“, I neglected to mention a supplement that I feel is quite good: . ZMA is a simple, all-natural, safe**, inexpensive and effective (at least on some levels–see below) dietary supplement. It contains a synergistic blend of just three ingredients: Zinc, Magnesium Asparatate and vitamin B6. ** Zinc toxicity… [Read more]

Music while exercising.

It doesn’t matter if I’m lifting weights, performing a little laid back LISS cardio, killing myself with insane interval work in my Bike Torture Chamber, ripping up the mountain bike trails (solo) or out on my road bike (solo, and when safety permits)–I have to have my music! Not only does music make training more enjoyable, when I’ve got the tunes cranked I feel better, stronger, faster… I think almost everyone who lifts can relate… [Read more]
