As regular readers of my blog know, I very much enjoy spicy foods! While I wouldn’t consider myself a true hot sauce aficionado (there are literally entire online communities dedicated to celebrating the love of all things spicy), I am definitely a fan.

Some of my favorite hot sauces.

Some of my favorite hot sauces.

One of the easiest ways to jazz up and change the flavors of the foods you eat on a regular basis is by using hot sauces. I love trying new hot sauces because they are inexpensive, add practically no calories and they taste great.

Some of my existing favorites are Huy Fong Sriracha, Tabasco Original Flavor, Tabasco Green Jalapeno, Tabasco Chipotle, Cholula Mexican Hot Sauce, Valentina Salsa Picante, Frank’s RedHot Hot Sauce, Cholula Chili Lime, Cholula Chili Garlic, Cholula Chipotle and Huy Fong Chili Garlic Sauce. You really can’t go wrong with any of these.

My modest collection of sauces is fairly well-rounded, but it was was lacking something: a nuclear option.

About a week ago a Facebook friend pointed me towards a sauce called Melinda’s Naga Jolokia. Rated at more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the Naga Jolokia (also known as the “Bhut Jolokia”, “Naga Morich” and the “Ghost Chili”) is 400 times hotter than Tabasco hot sauce. The Naga Jolokia was literally the hottest known pepper on the planet up until 2012, when it was dethroned by the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion only reined the Scoville charts for about a year, falling in 2013 to the current champion of heat, the Carolina Reaper.

So the Melinda’s Naga Jolokia label may be a little outdated with its claim, but that doesn’t make it any less hot. I’ve seen consumer-grade pepper sprays with less heat (click to enlarge):

So here’s the thing: I don’t like melt-your-face heat just for the sake of heat. I’m not a masochist. I like hot, but I want flavor with my heat. That’s where Melinda’s Naga Jolokia shines. Yes, it’s extremely hot; considerably hotter than, for example, Sriracha. But it’s not so hot that the awesome flavor becomes lost–and it really does have a wonderful flavor.

Don’t bother with this one if you’re not into very spicy foods. If you do enjoy a little fire on your tongue, you’re going to love this sauce, so pick up a bottle and enjoy.

Okay my fellow cyclists, I’ve unearthed an insane deal for you. Seriously, I don’t know what’s going on here, but my advice is to jump on it before Amazon comes to their senses and/or they sell out of their stock. Right now you can pick up Pearl iZUMI’s top-of-the line P.R.O. In-R-Cool® Bib Shorts for as little as $51.42. I picked up a few pair of XL in black/white for just $57.13. These bib shorts have a MSRP of $175.00, and I rarely see them fall below $130. Even at full price these shorts are worth the money, as they are extremely comfortable and last a long time. At these prices they are a steal. I can assure you that A) The deal is real, and B) These are authentic, brand new Pear iZUMi bib shorts. Do not let this get by you, stock up before they are all gone!

  1. Nice hot sauce collection! Love hot sauce, try mixing it with 0% Oikos Greek Yogurt to make a killer dipping/marinade sauce. Sriracha and Franks are my “go-to” hot sauces.

    • Agreed. PI’s Elite and PRO lines are both excellent bibs, and worth the money. I’ve never even seen prices like this on the Elite bibs, let alone their top-of-the-line PRO bibs. Crazy, but I’m not complaining!

    • Not at all. All of my bib shorts (I have several Pearl iZUMi and Bontrager) are XL, and they fit perfectly. The large bibs are too small in the quad area (I have big quads), and they are also not long enough in the torso, so I feel like I’m getting a wedgie the whole time.

  2. I never tried the red rooster sriracha sauce until I read it on this very blog. Now I love the stuff, and put it on practically everything. So, thanks John. 😀

Funny, I never really liked spicy foods until fairly recently. A local taco place had the most incredible shredded pork tacos, and they were filled with habenaro slices. My mouth was on fire, but they were some of the best tacos I ever had, and ever since, I have been hooked on all things spicy.

  3. Thanks again John. I am beginning Saturday on my most recent training comeback from cancer surgery. I am going with simplicity. Weights 3 times per week, cycling three times per week. One day off.

  4. Hey John. I had a recurrence in August 2013. Had to have a Thoracotomy to remove some new growth in my chest wall. This one was rough because they had to go back in to fix a chyle (fluid) leak five days later. My CT was clear on January 15 though. 🙂

My breathing feels pretty good now, but I need to start pushing the limits a little. Thanks for the link and such a great and inspirational website!
