TrainerRoad VirtualPower compared to Stages Power Meter: Round 2! TrainerRoad’s VirtualPower (Purple) compared to Stages Power Meter (Red): Sufferfest's "Angels" workout – Heart Rate

This is a follow-up article to my examination of TrainerRoad’s VirtualPower, and how it compares to a Stages power meter (see “TrainerRoad VirtualPower compared to Stages Power Meter“). For this test, I wanted to do an intense 1-hour workout. I decided to ride Sufferfest’s “Angels” workout. In order to obtain a complete set of data, I had to perform this workout twice… The first time I rode the workout was on Thursday, March 27th. For… [Read more]

Increased appetite; Ride Across USA team 400 KM training ride.

Towards the end of my 2014 cut my appetite went through the roof. The last week or so of my cut I was feeling perpetually hungry, and my strength was down. Now, nearly two weeks after reaching my cutting goal, my appetite continues to be above normal. I have been eating a little above maintenance-level calories (still 100% clean, of course–save for a single weekly splurge meal), and my strength still doesn’t feel quite back… [Read more]

Lower back pain – new twist. Lower Back Pain.

My lower back has been hurting since my bike wreck almost two weeks ago, but this week there’s been some new pain that was not present when I saw my doctor late last week. It’s not a constant pain, I only feel it when I perform certain motions. For example, when I bend over slightly–legs straight–to lift the toilet seat, the pain suddenly flairs up. It’s an acute, sharp, tingling pain that I feel deep… [Read more]

TrainerRoad VirtualPower compared to Stages Power Meter. TrainerRoad workout data displayed after completing the main test. Post-testing. All tests were performed in my Bike Torture Chamber.

Now that I’m using a Stages power meter, I thought it would be interesting to compare its power data to TrainerRoad’s “VirtualPower” data. Before I get to the test results, here are a few words about VirtualPower, the equipment I used for my tests and my testing methodology. What is TrainerRoad’s “VirtualPower”? For cyclists who wish to improve their speed and fitness, nothing is more effective than power-based training (for more information on training with… [Read more]

Windy 89 mile ride yesterday; New distance and elevation records set. Derp. Nearing the halfway point of our 89 mile ride. Good group, mostly down from snowy Wisconsin enjoying the ride in our beautiful Florida weather.

Yesterday my friend Jeff Stephens put the call out for a morning ride. Jeff sent me an advance email last week letting me know that he was planning on a couple rides this week with a group visiting from Wisconsin, so I’d already penciled this ride into my schedule: “Going to ride with Mike Spiro and his band of Wisconsin friends in the morning. Depart from FNB @ 9:00 AM. I let ’em pick the… [Read more]

2014 Clean Air Century: post-ride report. At the end of my ride (this was not a race). Cyclists who completed the full 100-mile route were given a commemorative medal--a nice little bonus.

Saturday was the 5th (and final) WMBC XFL (Cross-Florida) training ride: the 2014 Clean Air Century on the Withlacoochee Trail. This was my first ride on the Withlacoochee, and I was looking forward to checking it out. The group I rode with consisted of about a dozen cyclists, all of which were doing the 100-mile route. Had it not been for the wreck that prematurely ended last Saturday’s 130-mile training ride, this would have been… [Read more]

Stages power meter here; I now wear a M race-cut jersey (photo). March 21, 2014. 6.2% body fat/158.4 pounds. In this photo I am at Brick City Bicycles trying on one of their jerseys. I was surprised that the Medium Race Cut (pictured) fit me perfectly, as I've always worn a Large.

Brick City Bicycles contacted me late last week to let me know that the Stages Power Meter I ordered had arrived! Brick City is all the way out by Santos, so my original plan was to have them ship the power meter to me to save me the drive. Because the power meter wouldn’t have arrived at my home until Monday, I decided to make the drive on Friday to pick it up. There were… [Read more]

WMBC XFL Training Ride #5: Clean Air Century 2014 Clean Air Ride

Today is the 5th, and final, WMBC XFL (Cross-Florida) Training Ride. This training ride is actually an organized event called the “Clean Air Ride“, which is held annually at the Withlacoochee Trail. The Withlacoochee trail is the longest paved trail in Florida, and is listed in National Geographic’s Traveler Magazine as one of the top 20 trails in the United States.
