I beat the spring time change this year.

While I love the extra hour of daylight ushered in by daylight savings time, my rants against the spring time change are infamous ’round these here parts. I’ll spare everyone my (nearly) yearly diatribe, as my feelings on the time change are well-established.

Circa 1918. All Hoes on deck.

Circa 1918. All Hoes on deck.

Quickly, though, for those who may not be aware, I am 100% against the time change. I feel DST should be in effect year-round. The twice-yearly time changes are highly disruptive, antiquated and pointless. I have a very sensitive internal clock, and my circadian rhythm is thrown into disarray by this ridiculous ritual that any sensible society would have done away with long ago.

See, I can’t help myself. Deep breath.

This year I decided that I was going to outsmart the time change. And I did…

I’m an early riser, usually up and and at ’em before 6:00 AM. Lately, though, I’ve been getting up even earlier–between 4:00 and 5:00 AM. The earlier rise time allows me to get several hours of uninterrupted work in before the cacophony of phone, email and texts alerts launch their daily assault. As a result, my mornings are much less stressful, and that trickles down through the rest of my day.

I never set an alarm clock, in fact I don’t even own one. I really hate those obnoxious devices. I feel that my body is the best judge of when I’ve had enough sleep, and prefer to wake up naturally. The trick to that, of course, is I make sure I go to bed early enough. I’m usually in bed by 9:00 PM, sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later. I’m not much of an evening guy, I suppose.

Anyway, with the impending time change looming on the horizon, a few weeks ago I decided that I had to do something to prepare: I did not want to lose the “extra” couple of hours I’ve been enjoying! So a few weeks ago I started going to bed just a little bit earlier each night, and waking up a little earlier. By the time the clocks went forward this past Sunday morning, I was waking up, naturally, at around 3:30 AM.

Yesterday–the first day of the time change–I woke up at 4:30 AM, and this morning I woke up at 3:45 AM feeling fully rested.

  1. John — I actually look forward to your rants because I detest DST like nobody’s business, and I will rant to anyone who will listen. I usually go to bed when you are getting up (4-5 am)….lol, but I managed to get to bed early enough to deal with the time change. Good to see you are handling it well this year 🙂
