WMBC XFL Training Ride #5: Clean Air Century
The Withlacoochee trail is the longest paved trail in Florida, and is listed in National Geographic’s Traveler Magazine as one of the top 20 trails in the United States. The World Wildlife Fund says the Withlacoochee trail is “One of the coolest places you’ve EVER seen”. This will be my first ride there, and I’m looking forward to checking it out!
Proceeds from the event benefit the Key Training Center, an organization dedicated to serving adults with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Since 1966, the Key Center has offered “Kindness, Love, Dignity, and Respect” to individuals and their families, providing vitally needed community based services to nearly 300 developmentally disabled adult citizens.
There are four distances from which to choose, ranging from 14 miles on up to 100 miles. We’ll all be doing the 100 mile (162 kilometer) ride and, depending on how we’re feeling, may extended that distance to 120+ miles (~200 kilometers). In all likelihood I’ll probably pull the plug at 100 miles even if I’m feeling good. I really need to let these saddle sores heal as much as possible before the 170 mile (274 kilometer) Cross-Florida ride, which is in two weeks. If I don’t see some improvement with the saddle sores, the last half of the XFL ride is going to be pure torture.
I need to get the show on the road. The trailhead is about a 1.5 hour drive, and I need to pick up my registration packet and be ready to roll at 7:00 AM.
Have a great Saturday!
