Increased appetite; Ride Across USA team 400 KM training ride.

Towards the end of my 2014 cut my appetite went through the roof. The last week or so of my cut I was feeling perpetually hungry, and my strength was down.

Now, nearly two weeks after reaching my cutting goal, my appetite continues to be above normal. I have been eating a little above maintenance-level calories (still 100% clean, of course–save for a single weekly splurge meal), and my strength still doesn’t feel quite back to normal yet. That’s not to suggest I feel weak–I don’t–but I definitely feel as though I’m running at about 85% of my max right now. I’ve even felt a little light-headed at times.

It’s interesting that on recent bike rides I’ve often started off the rides feeling sluggish, but then found my strength and energy after 30-45 minutes of riding. In fact, on the past couple of 100+ mile rides I’ve been stronger and put out more watts during the second half of the rides.

I figure this is all my body simply re-adjusting to normal after being in an aggressive 9-week caloric deficit. I also suspect that the Cyclobenzaprine (the muscle relaxant my doctor put me on after a recent bike wreck) is playing some roll in this: the known side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, tired feeling and muscle weakness. I hate taking this stuff, but it really has helped with the pain, and has allowed me to sleep through the night.

All that said, I’m glad that next week I’m having a comprehensive blood workup done, and a complete physical examination. Better safe than sorry.

ride across usa lookI want to give a shout out to the Ride Across USA team! Co-captain (and my frequent riding partner), Tracy Draper, along with the rest of the team, are doing a 400+ kilometer (~254 mile) training ride today! This would be a big day under any circumstances, but it also happens to be raining heavily and extremely windy right now. Not only that, Tracy has been dealing with some lower back issues of her own. Despite all that, Tracy and her team are out there pedaling as I type this, raising money and awareness for Hope For The Warriors. On June 4, 2014 the Ride Across USA team will set off from Malibu, California and, over the next 35 days, they will ride their bikes clear across the country to Amelia Island, Florida.     Are you still taking ZMA now that your cut has finished? Picked some up on your recommendation and I definitely feel like I’m having higher quality, deeper sleep when taking it. Unfortunately I haven’t gotten any vivid dreams from it.
