Week #2 of my 2014 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report.

For more information on my nine-week 2014 cutting program (which I used leading into this maintenance phase), please check out this blog. My end-of-cut blog and stats can be found here.

Tools of the trade
This is the exact equipment I use to track my progress every week

RAW DATA

My scale weight this morning (as measured by the EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale) is 162.2 pounds. That’s a +2.0 pound change since last week’s weight of 160.2 pounds, and a +3.8 pound change from my 2014 maintenance starting weight of 158.4 pounds.

My 7-point body fat reading this morning (as measured by the FatTrack PRO Digital Body Fat Caliper) is 6.2%. That’s a -0.0% change since last week’s body fat measurement of 6.2%, and a -0.0% change from my 2014 maintenance starting body fat measurement of 6.2%.

Over the past week I’ve gained 0.13 pounds of fat and gained 1.87 pounds of lean mass. Since the beginning of my 2014 maintenance program I’ve gained a total of 0.24 pounds of fat and gained a total of 3.56 pounds of lean mass.

My tape measurements (as measured by the MyoTape) indicate no changes over the past week.

ANALYSIS

A little more water weight gain this week, but no appreciable increase in fat (see “DIET”, below, for more details). I must have been extremely “dry” when I finished my cut, as once my cut ended I leveled off at 160 pounds I stayed there right up until this morning. None of my soft tape measurements have moved so much as a fraction of an inch since my cut ended, and my body fat reading was, once again, dead-on 6.2%. In fact, yesterday evening I thought I looked more cut up and vascular than I did the day my cut ended!

DIET

My diet this week was very clean, and I did not consume a full-on splurge meal. I did, however, eat a massive tub (170 ounces) of movie theater popcorn yesterday, along with a bag of Peanut M&Ms. That popcorn is the reason I’m holding water this morning (my scale weight all last week and through yesterday morning was 160.2 pounds).

Also, as I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, my appetite has been insane the past few weeks. I’ve actually been eating what I thought was above maintenance all week long, but since I’ve not gained any fat perhaps I can further increase that with no ill effects.

To drink I consumed only water (about 1.5+ gallons per day) along with 2 cups of black coffee each morning, a cup of warm Yogi Peach DeTox tea each afternoon and a cup of warm Yogi Bedtime tea each evening before bed. I also had a Coke Zero (which, by the way, I prefer taste-wise to a regular Coke) with my popcorn yesterday. I have consumed no alcohol this week.

TRAINING

Activity level this week has been moderately high. So far this week I’ve ridden 317 kilometers (197 miles), and I’ll be riding today as well. I chose not to train with weights this week, as I’m trying to let my back heal up. My back, by the way, is feeling noticeably better this morning!

My 2014 riding streak continues unbroken with 89 straight days in the saddle starting December 31, 2013. This riding streak evolved naturally, and I had no specific intentions of even creating a streak like this. At this point, though, I don’t want it to end. It will take an ride-preventing injury or a major life event to stop me now. My cycling totals for 2014 (88 days) currently stand at 4,358 kilometers (2,707.9 miles) with 64,196 feet of elevation.

I’ve already topped my previous single-month cycling distance personal record (1,574 kilometers/978.3 miles, set last month). My March cycling distance total currently stands at 1,724 kilometers/1,071.0 miles, and there are still 2 days left to ride this month.

I’ve set 50 cycling personal records for time so far in 2014. My total riding time for 2014 currently stands at 147 hours.

WRAP-UP

I’m pleased with how the week has gone, and I’ll be continuing to up my calories this coming week. I’ve got the 170 mile Cross-Florida ride next weekend, and I want to be well-fueled for that!

What is your take on diet sodas and artificial sweeteners? Do you believe they are as awful as folks like to claim versus their full sugar counterparts?
