On vacation!

I thought this day was never going to get here. For the past five months I’ve been working and training very hard, and over the past week I’ve been feeling run down and dealing with a bad cold. This break could not have come at a better time. I’ll still be training hard while I’m off, of course, but I won’t be blogging or doing any work outside of emergencies. My vacation starts today after… [Read more]

How being sick has improved my cycling. My current "Fitness & Freshness" chart

Man, my past few blogs sure have been uninspired. That cold really kicked my butt for a few days, and I just haven’t felt much like writing. My sinuses continue to be the main issue, and that’s affected my sleep, which has affected my energy, which has affected pretty much everything I do. I’m still suffering from the cold, but it’s sort of leveled off now. I’m really hoping that by tomorrow I’ll be noticing… [Read more]

Endorphins tricked me yesterday; Cold improving. Yogi Peach Detox Tea - Love this stuff!

Yesterday morning I was feeling pretty crappy (I have a bad cold), but I forced myself to get out and ride anyway. I was originally going to do a short 32 kilometer (20 mile) ride at a very relaxed Zone 1 (Recovery) pace, but once I got warmed up I started feeling much better. I decided to extend the ride a bit and wound up doing 50 kilometers (31.4 miles) in Zone 2 (Endurance). That… [Read more]

A cold got me; Vacation reminder.

I very rarely become sick, but a couple days ago I felt the beginnings of a cold coming on. Yesterday my cold symptoms became a little worse, and this morning things are not any better. My throat hurts pretty bad, and my sinuses are a wreck. Thankfully the cold doesn’t seem to be in my chest, and I’m not bed-ridden or anything like that. I definitely did not feel like riding yesterday, but I forced… [Read more]

Memorial Day thanks flag

Short blog today. I’ve got a bit of a cold going–sore throat, sinuses–and I want to get my bike ride in before I manage to talk myself out of it. I’m definitely not in the mood to ride today, but I’ve got to keep that riding streak alive: 146 days, and counting! I would like to express my gratitude for all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for my country. I… [Read more]

2014 maintenance progress report: week #10 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #10 of my 2014 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. Please note that last Sunday I was providing continuing coverage of the “8 Days in California” cycling challenge, and there was no maintenance report; so, when you see “last week” below that actually refers to two weeks ago (May 11th) For more information on my nine-week 2014 cutting program (which I used leading into this maintenance phase), please… [Read more]

Excellent ride yesterday, reaping the rewards of the 8DC. Stretching our legs on the open road...

Yesterday morning I did my first non-recovery ride since completing TrainerRoad’s “8 Days in California” (8DC) challenge. The 82 kilometer (51 mile) route took us north from Wooton Park, then turned west through Altoona and, finally, we pedaled southward through Emerelda marsh back to Wooton. Wooton park is very nice, but starting our rides from there requires about a 15 kilometer stop-and-start slow grind until we reach some open road. I don’t mind warming up… [Read more]

Replaced my pedals and cleats: 600 km report. New Shimano Ultegra PD-6800 carbon pedals mounted on my 2013 Madone 5.9.

About a month ago I flipped over my shoes and saw that my cleats were badly in need of replacement. While I was at it, I took a good look at my pedals (Shimano Ultegra PD-6610), and they were pretty well trashed, too. I checked the mileage on the pedals (see my article, “An underutilized, but very useful Strava feature: component mileage tracking“), and they had nearly 20,000 kilometers on them. I decided it was… [Read more]

Riding easy is hard; The Warrior Century Ride is Sunday. Get some!

I’m feeling really good on the bike right now, but I also realize that I’m still not fully recovered from the grueling “8 Days in California” (8DC) challenge. It’s been difficult to temper my desire to get back to my usual riding distances and intensity, but I’m forcing myself to do it. Yesterday I did a short ~50 kilometer ride, and my plan was to keep my average power in the middle of Zone 2… [Read more]

Very promising early results as I recover from the 8DC. My current "Fitness & Freshness" chart on Strava

The day after I completed the “8 Days in California” (8DC) challenge, I went for an easy and short 32 kilometer/20 mile ride. My legs were definitely feeling heavy, and I was quite fatigued in general. After 8 straight days of very intense riding, it was a little strange to be soft peddling around at 18 MPH in Zone 1 (Recovery). For yesterday’s ride I increased the distance slightly, and I also increased the intensity… [Read more]
