In a couple of recent blogs (see “New forums to be added? Suggestions and feedback encouraged!” and “Follow-up to yesterday’s blog: JSF Forum changes are coming.“), I talked about a few changes to the JSF Forums that I have been considering. There are nearly 1,000,000 existing posts on the JSF Forums, so I had to make my choices with that in mind. Clearly I can’t go through and start moving individual posts around. Also, I… [Read more]

Century Season approaches! My upcoming ride calendar.

I know we’re only just heading into August, but I’m already getting very excited about “Century Season”. Big rides, cooler weather… yes, VERY excited! Here are some of the upcoming rides I’m going to be doing along with many of my friends. Please, come out and ride with us! September 28, 2014: Six Gap Century – I’ll be kicking off Century Season in style by heading up to the mountains of North Georgia for my… [Read more]

Bontrager Speed Limit rear brake problem.

Since late last August I’ve put 15,000 kilometers on my 2013 Trek Madone 5.9, and I absolutely love this bike. I’ve also done all my own mechanical work on the Madone, and I find that it’s almost as fun to work on as it is to ride. So, after nearly a year of ownership, 15,000 kilometers in its saddle and dozens of hours in my work stand for routine maintenance, I think I have a… [Read more]

Saying goodbye to my saddle bag: enter the Sticky Pod.

In late June I published an article titled “What I carry on road rides“. In that article I discussed not only what I carry on road rides, but how I carry all of that stuff around. Up until late last week I’ve always used an under-the-saddle bag to carry a large portion of my emergency gear. I’m not a big fan of saddle bags but, as I stated in the article, I’ve always felt that… [Read more]

2014 maintenance progress report: week #19

Week #19 of my 2014 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. Note that during my vacation ending June 15th I put on a little unwanted weight, so starting on June 16th I began a “mini-cut”. You can read more about all of this in my blog, “Post-vacation report: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly“. This mini-cut will continue until I get back down to my desired weight of… [Read more]

Weight down, power up; New photo.

It’s shaping up to be another productive week of fat loss–and my power on the bike and energy levels have not suffered in the least. My scale weight as of this morning is 162.8 pounds (73.85 kilograms), and a couple of my soft tape measurements have gone down another quarter inch over the past week. As always, I’ll be doing a full set of soft tape measurements, a 7-site body fat test and a full… [Read more]

Trying new product today; Dog-sitting is fun; Forums.

A few quick topics this morning… Some of you may recall my recent article, “What I carry on road rides“. In that article I touched on the somewhat controversial subject of under-the-saddle bags. Personally I think a micro bag on training rides is just fine, although there’s no question that bikes look better without them. Check out the aforementioned article for more of my thoughts on that subject. Anyway, one of the riders in my… [Read more]

We have a furry house guest…

Lisa and I are very excited right now: we’re dog-sitting! My friend Mike, who you may recall has been recovering from stomach cancer treatment all year long, is doing much better now. After an incredibly difficult year, Mike is taking his family on a much needed vacation. Our household has seemed so quiet since Loki died, and Lisa and I jumped at the chance to care for Mike’s dog while he and his family are… [Read more]

Follow-up to yesterday’s blog: JSF Forum changes are coming.

I want to thank the JSF members and guests who took the time to give me their thoughts, comments and suggestions yesterday (see New forums to be added? Suggestions and feedback encouraged!). It’s interesting to note that if I’d asked for these suggestions 10 years ago, almost all of the comments would have been posted to a dedicated thread on the forum (like the thread I started yesterday). These days the way we move information… [Read more]

New forums to be added? Suggestions and feedback encouraged!

I think it’s well past time to breathe a little life back into the JSF Forums. The JSF forums were once a thriving community (we have nearly 30,000 members and close to 1,000,000 posts), but over the past few years new posts have died down considerably. Most of the activity these days is found in the two journal sections (the public journals and private VIP journals), and I’d like to work on changing that. I… [Read more]
