August 2014 distance goal: 2,000 kilometers.
Last month I cycled a total of 1,838 kilometers (1,142.1 miles), which was a new single month distance personal record. I’ve breached the 1,800 kilometer mark 4 of the past 5 months (my mileage total was impacted in May when I did TrainerRoad’s extremely intense, but relatively low mile, “8 Days in California” challenge), and I think it’s time to stop dancing around the elephant in the room: this month I’m going for my first 2,000 kilometer (1,243 mile) month.
In order to reach this goal I’ll need to average 64.52 kilometers (40 miles) per day in August. As of yesterday I’m slightly behind pace, having ridden a total of 867 kilometers (538.7 miles) so far this month. That’s only 36 kilometers behind pace, so that’s not a big deal at all. Also, I’ve got a 170+ kilometer ride coming up in about a week, and that will provide a nice boost to my monthly total.
On the elevation side of things, I’ll almost certainly break last month’s PR of 41,549 feet (12,664.13 meters). So far this month I’ve logged 21,386 feet of vertical in 14 days, so I’m ahead of pace. I’m not paying much attention to the elevation PR this month, as next month I should log well in excess of 50,000 feet, perhaps even more than 60,000 feet (thanks to Six Gap and Six Gap training).
Thunder, lightning and dark storm clouds are outside my window as I type this. Looks like this morning’s ride is going to be wet and windy…
