Why I won’t be getting a GoPro Hero4 (and what I will be buying). The Garmin Virb

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, over the past few days you’ve probably heard that GoPro is set to launch their all-new Hero4 series of wearable action cameras. GoPro’s soon-to-arrive (release date is October 5th) flagship camera, the Hero4 Black, can shoot at an impressive Ultra-HD (4k) resolution at 30 FPS, and will set you back $500. When it comes to technology I’m all for pushing the envelope, but this camera is a waste… [Read more]

A fairly lengthy recap of the past two weeks… Lisa took this picture of me late last week at the end of yet another 14 hour day. While I love my work station, by the end of last week I was sick of this view.

Hello once again, faithful readers! I’m very happy to be in a position to resume my daily blog after a two week hiatus. The past couple of weeks have been anything but dull. This morning I’ll go over the major stuff: work, training, health and diet. My work, which was the primary reason for the two week break from blogging, was about what I expected: very long days sitting at my computer. Some mornings I… [Read more]

Signing off for a couple weeks…

This will be my final blog for a couple weeks. As I wrote in yesterday’s blog, I’m being pulled in about a dozen directions right now, and I need to do everything I can to prioritize my limited resources and focus on the critical stuff. My usual daily blog will resume on Monday, September 29, 2014. Over the next couple weeks I’ll still be around on the JSF Forums and Facebook, and of course I’ll… [Read more]

Time off announcement.

I’m feeling stretched extremely thin, and over the next three weeks things are going to get even worse. I need to minimize my commitments and simplify my schedule as much as possible right now, and so I’ve decided to take a couple weeks off from blogging. Tomorrow’s blog will be my last for the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately this will not be a vacation. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to take some time… [Read more]

Excellent ride yesterday, couple new PRs. One of my favorite stretches of road: Highway 19 north of Altoona.

For yesterday’s ride I decided to go solo, and I rode north on Highway 19 into the Ocala National Forest. Highway 19 is one of my favorite stretches of road: the road surface is generally very good, the traffic is fairly light, there is a nice wide shoulder and it’s quite scenic–especially as you get into the forest. Also, once you get past Altoona/Highway 42, there are no traffic lights or stop signs for many,… [Read more]

Working on several JSF projects and changes…

Between work, training and normal day-to-day duties, my free time has been fairly limited lately. Over this past weekend I was able to carve out a little time to resume progress on a few JSF projects I’ve got in the works. Here are some of the things you can expect to see in the coming weeks: Software updates to the main JSF site (this site). None of these changes will be revolutionary, but there will… [Read more]

Fun weekend of riding! This is while we were waiting for the rider who had the mechanical. I'm second from the left, pecking away at my phone. Image Credit: Marion Kusters

What a great weekend of riding! All told I rode 244 kilometers (151.8 miles): 163.3 kilometers (101.5 miles) on Saturday, and 81 kilometers (50.3 miles) on Sunday. Even though I wasn’t feeling well on Saturday morning, I decided to do the planned 162 kilometer (100 mile) group ride. Making the choice between doing the ride or staying home and going short was a tough call. I decided that I was feeling well enough to ride… [Read more]

I’m sick, but doing today’s century anyway.

When Lisa was sick a couple weeks ago, I was able to fight it off before it really took hold. Well, yesterday morning my luck ran out: I woke up feeling terrible. I had a sore throat, my whole body was achy and sore, and the lymph node under my left arm was swollen and quite painful! The last time I experienced a swollen lymph node was, I believe, when I was a teenager and… [Read more]

Central Florida Cyclists and Mountain Bikers – New Private Forum.

As a result of a discussion on Strava with some local friends, I’ve set up a new private forum exclusively for Central Florida cyclists and mountain bikers. The main impetus behind the new forum is to provide a place for locals to set up group rides, but it will also serve as a place to organize meet-ups and other cycling-related social gatherings (should involve beer), trade post-ride war stories, post pictures or just hang out… [Read more]
