1 week countdown to the 2014 Mount Dora Bike Festival!
Exactly one week from today the annual Mount Dora Bike Festival kicks off! This year’s festival will be held over three days: Friday, October 10th through Sunday, October 12th.
This will be the 40th annual Mount Dora Bike Festival, and it promises to be the biggest and best yet! Here’s the skinny:
The 40th Anniversary of the Mount Dora Bicycle Festival promises to be the best one in AGES! Having undergone an extreme make over of the physical property that encases the Chamber of Commerce, adjacent park and fresh new faces at the Chamber there is much excitement surrounding the big anniversary. In addition local cyclists have been involved in the planning.
Friday morning rides kick off the festival as our guides from the “We Must Be Crazy” cycling club lead various exploration rides to visit historic and beautiful parts of Lake County. Friday evening ends with a special treat: a Ghost Ride and mingle time at Merrill’s (across the street from the Chamber.)
Saturday morning begins bright and early with the “Century Ride”. Once those riders are seen off, rides of varying distances bring our guests back to the Chamber throughout the day. A brand new century route will take riders through beautiful northern Lake County on flat, scenic country roads. The metric century will lead our guests through Emerelda Marsh – a classic route of the MDBF.
After your ride, be sure to patronize our many fantastic restaurants within walking distance of down town. Also, plan on spending your Saturday evening at the Street Party with friendly competitions, contests and games, live entertainment and even more fun.
Sunday’s routes will start early and wrap up around lunch time so that you can get back on the road if need be –and wrap up the weekend with hotdogs on the grill and an ice cream social!
I am working on Friday and, unfortunately, won’t be able to attend the festival that day. On Saturday morning, however, I will be marshaling the Century (100 mile) ride. As mentioned above, this year’s century route is new to the MTD bike festival, but I’ve done this exact route about a half-dozen times and it’s quite beautiful and scenic–one of my favorite local centuries. This ride rolls at 7:30 AM sharp. I really hope to see many of you out there on Saturday morning!
If you’re not quite ready for 100 miles, Saturday’s metric century (67 miles/108 kilometers) route is also amazing. My club (We Must Be Crazy) frequently journeys through the Emerelda marsh, and it’s spectacular. In fact, just last Saturday our ride took us through “the swamp”. The metric rolls at 7:45 AM.
If you’re looking for something a little shorter and/or more family friendly, not to worry! There are 40, 21 and 8 mile rides available on Saturday as well. Check out the official web site for all the details and to get registered.
On Sunday I’ll be marshaling the “Assault on Sugarloaf” route, which rolls at 7:45 AM. This is another route I’m very familiar with, and it’s a blast. Come out and join us!
You can find much more information on the routes and the many festival activities at the official web site.
Online registration closes on Monday, October 6th! You can walk-up register at the event, but it will cost you an extra 10 bucks. Go get registered now and prepare to have a fantastic weekend celebrating cycling and the beautiful city of Mount Dora!
