Felt off yesterday, this morning; Recovery is important.

I was pressed for time yesterday, so I did a short 20 mile/32 kilometer mid-Tempo (Zone 3) solo ride: weighted average power of 239 watts, average speed of 21.5 MPH. This level of effort requires focus and is moderately difficult, but it’s not exactly killing it, either.

I felt way off my game during yesterday’s ride, and I actually felt the same way on Tuesday’s fairly laid-back 54 mile/87 kilometer ride.

This morning when I woke up I was a little congested and, in general, not feeling great. At first I thought that I’d simply not done enough recovery after this past weekend’s tough rides, but when Lisa woke up she told me she’s feeling the exact same way. So it looks like we’ve both got something…. AGAIN.

I do think recovery (or, lack thereof) is part of my problem, though.

This is the third time over the past few months I’ve been under the weather, and that’s unheard of for me. There’s a lot of stuff going around this year, and I think the combination of all the hard training/riding I’ve been doing along with stress has weakened my immune system. Thankfully I’ve not been so sick that I’ve been off the bike at all, but I need to watch it or my luck is going to run out.

RecoveryMy nutrition has been really solid, and so has my rest/sleep. That leaves recovery. Yeah, I need to do a better job of getting my recovery rides in. I don’t like doing recovery rides, but since I choose to ride every day recovery rides are a necessary “evil”. I’ve got to start taking that aspect of my training a little more seriously, or I’m going to wind up on the sidelines.

There is just a little over two months to go in my personal “Ride Every Day In 2014” challenge. While I do not regret taking on this difficult challenge (and it’s looking very likely I will meet my three goals: ride every day in 2014, ride more than 20,000 kilometers in 2014 and ascend more than 360,000 feet in 2014), I will be glad when it’s over. I think feeling like this is okay. Challenges are not supposed to be easy, or they wouldn’t be challenging. 🙂
