Mystery noise found: Zipp 188 hub

In yesterday’s blog I mentioned some drivetrain noise I’ve been trying to pin down. I figured it out yesterday, and it turns out the noise was coming from my Zipp 404 Firecrest’s rear hub (the Zipp 188 freehub).

No big deal, right? Just overhaul the hub and problem solved. Well, turns out the guy who sold me these wheels had stripped out the little 2mm clinch nut set bolt. I finally got the bolt out this morning, but it was a pain in the ass and took hours and hours of experimentation and cussing.

The inside of the hub is a mess (click to enlarge):

Anyway, I’m glad I finally got the bolt out so that I can service this thing. In fact, I’ve got to wrap this up and get back out to my workshop. I need to get this done before this morning’s group ride, and I am going to have to work quickly.
