Thursday, January 17, 2019 - Welcome, guest user!

Power PRs vs KOMs: all that glitters is not gold; New FTP established. KOMs are nice, but they are comparatively worthless to me next to power output PRs.

I have been a Strava user for a few years now, and I think it’s a great service. The interesting thing about that, though, is how drastically my reasons for liking Strava have changed since I first started using it in 2012. Like most competitive people–and I am most definitely that–I was first drawn to Strava for its timed segment “virtual competition” features. In those early days it was all about chasing down as many… [Read more]

My pre/intra/post-ride nutrition for a typical 100 mile ride. Bananas and bikes: a match made in heaven.

I received an email asking about my pre-ride, intra-ride and post-ride nutrition/supplements for a 100 mile ride like the Horrible Hundred, which I did this past Sunday (see “Ride report: 2014 Horrible Hundred“). I thought I’d answer that excellent question in this morning’s blog. I need to point out that my intra-ride nutrition will vary quite a lot depending on the conditions (course difficulty, pace, temperature and so on), but my pre-ride and post-ride routine… [Read more]

2014 goals: taking stock of my progress.

With the Horrible Hundred now in the rear view mirror (see “Ride report: 2014 Horrible Hundred” for the details), Century Season has come to a close. 2014 has been an amazing year of cycling, and my strongest year on the bike by a wide margin. While I still have plenty of great rides ahead (including another century or two) and plenty more to accomplish in order to reach my 2014 cycling goals, I think it’s… [Read more]

Ride report: 2014 Horrible Hundred A small swatch of the crowd just before the start of the 2014 Horrible Hundred. More than 2,000 cyclists were in attendance this year.

Sunday, November 16, 2014 was the 35th annual Horrible Hundred and, overall, it was an excellent day in the saddle! The weather was nearly perfect: my recorded a low temperature of 55°F, a high of 82.4°F and an average of 69°F. I certainly wouldn’t have minded if it had been a little cooler, but it’s impossible to complain about such a beautiful day. My Garmin recorded an average of 82°F at last year’s Horrible Hundred,… [Read more]

Easy ride before the Horrible Hundred; Brakes for Bloodbear. Brakes for Bloodbear

I’m very much looking forward to the Horrible Hundred tomorrow! I’m in pretty good form right now: my fitness is up, and my fatigue is relatively low. Hopefully I’ll put in a decent performance. I’ll be doing my usual club ride this morning, and it’s a short one: just 32 miles/52 kilometers. After the ride I’m going to give my Madone a complete cleaning and tune so she’s ready to roll first thing tomorrow morning!… [Read more]

Novembeard: Day 14. Novembeard - Day 14.

So I’m not shaving this month (see, “I’M NOT SHAVING THIS MONTH, JUST BECAUSE“), but I have to admit that I’ve come pretty close to throwing in the towel a couple times. I’d almost forgotten just how itchy growing a beard can be, and that itchiness is especially annoying when I’m stressed out with work or whatever. I know a few guys who already broke out the razors and shave cream, bringing their Novembeards to… [Read more]

Breakthrough training ride yesterday. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Yesterday morning the weather was absolutely stunning! I figured the beautiful weather was a directive from the Universe for me to get one last hard training ride in before I start easing off in anticipation for this Sunday’s Horrible Hundred. I whipped up a 90 kilometer (56 mile) route that included about 2,000 feet of elevation, and set off by myself. The temperature was perfect: mid to upper 60s (F) and sunny. The winds were… [Read more]

Century Season finale: Horrible Hundred

Century Season is winding down, but this year’s grand finale is a great ride: The Horrible Hundred! I did this ride last year, and had a fantastic time. Unfortunately I wound up doing most the ride solo, as I had trouble finding a group that was riding at my pace. I also got caught behind a massive pack at the start, and it took me forever to get in front of them. Here is last… [Read more]

Introducing Bloodbear, my 1972 Raleigh Super Course Fixie 1972 Raleigh Super Course Fixie Frankenbike. I call her Bloodbear.

In yesterday’s blog I talked a bit about the vintage 1972 Raleigh Super Course bike I picked up, which has been converted to a fixie. A lot of my friends ride fixies, but this is my first one. Today’s blog is mostly going to be a photo gallery, but before I dive into that I wanted to answer the questions that I received in response to yesterday’s blog. One obvious question is, “If the bike… [Read more]
