Easy ride before the Horrible Hundred; Brakes for Bloodbear. Brakes for Bloodbear

I’m very much looking forward to the Horrible Hundred tomorrow! I’m in pretty good form right now: my fitness is up, and my fatigue is relatively low. Hopefully I’ll put in a decent performance. I’ll be doing my usual club ride this morning, and it’s a short one: just 32 miles/52 kilometers. After the ride I’m going to give my Madone a complete cleaning and tune so she’s ready to roll first thing tomorrow morning!… [Read more]

Novembeard: Day 14. Novembeard - Day 14.

So I’m not shaving this month (see, “I’M NOT SHAVING THIS MONTH, JUST BECAUSE“), but I have to admit that I’ve come pretty close to throwing in the towel a couple times. I’d almost forgotten just how itchy growing a beard can be, and that itchiness is especially annoying when I’m stressed out with work or whatever. I know a few guys who already broke out the razors and shave cream, bringing their Novembeards to… [Read more]

Breakthrough training ride yesterday. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Yesterday morning the weather was absolutely stunning! I figured the beautiful weather was a directive from the Universe for me to get one last hard training ride in before I start easing off in anticipation for this Sunday’s Horrible Hundred. I whipped up a 90 kilometer (56 mile) route that included about 2,000 feet of elevation, and set off by myself. The temperature was perfect: mid to upper 60s (F) and sunny. The winds were… [Read more]

Century Season finale: Horrible Hundred

Century Season is winding down, but this year’s grand finale is a great ride: The Horrible Hundred! I did this ride last year, and had a fantastic time. Unfortunately I wound up doing most the ride solo, as I had trouble finding a group that was riding at my pace. I also got caught behind a massive pack at the start, and it took me forever to get in front of them. Here is last… [Read more]

Introducing Bloodbear, my 1972 Raleigh Super Course Fixie 1972 Raleigh Super Course Fixie Frankenbike. I call her Bloodbear.

In yesterday’s blog I talked a bit about the vintage 1972 Raleigh Super Course bike I picked up, which has been converted to a fixie. A lot of my friends ride fixies, but this is my first one. Today’s blog is mostly going to be a photo gallery, but before I dive into that I wanted to answer the questions that I received in response to yesterday’s blog. One obvious question is, “If the bike… [Read more]

Birthday present: 1972 Raleigh Super Course (Fixie) Picking up my 1972 Raleigh Super Course fixie yesterday.

Yesterday I added a new bike to my stable, and it’s a true vintage: the 1972 Raleigh Super Course! I’ve been wanting a “fun” bike for more casual/social rides, like the one we do out to the Yalaha Bakery on Sunday. Well, Brian Jensen, who rides with my club, made me an offer on this classic that was too good to refuse. The bike is not stock, in fact it’s a Frankenbike. I’ll go into… [Read more]

Finally celebrating my birthday this weekend! Lisa made me a special birthday cake!

My 46th birthday was on October 19th, and we were supposed to have family come over and stay with us that weekend to celebrate. I picked up a pretty bad cold around that time, and I also passed it on to Lisa. I was feeling much better by the time my birthday weekend rolled around, but Lisa was suffering the worst of it. We decided to postpone the celebration. The following weekend was the Horse… [Read more]

Some of you might remember that back in late 2008 I didn’t shave for a few months. By the time I decided to trim my beard up I was looking a wee bit rough around the edges. I grew my beard out in 2008 for a couple of reasons… First of all, I was bulking at the time, and nothing goes better with packing on slabs of lean mass than an unruly tangle of facial… [Read more]

Goals for the New Year: I will be cutting.

I don’t think it’s too early to start planning and setting goals for 2015. In fact, I think the sooner you start thinking about what you want to accomplish, the better. I’ll be cutting body fat the first part of the year, there’s no question about that. I’m currently up about 7 pounds from my 2014 end-of-cut weight of 158.4 pounds, and I’ll be putting on a little more weight over the holiday months. I… [Read more]
