Monday, October 14, 2019 - Welcome, guest user!

2015 Cross-Florida training rides begin today. The 270 kilometer / 167 mile Cross-Florida route.

Some of you may recall that last April I did the 33rd annual Cross-Florida (XFL) ride. At 270 kilometers (167 miles), it was truly an epic day in the saddle (the ride can be split over two day, if desired, but I did it as a single ride). You can check out my 2014 XFL ride reports here: Part I and Part II.   The ride itself was amazing and quite memorable, but I also… [Read more]

I’ve been up since 2:25 AM. COFFEE! My trusty Keurig has been working pretty much non-stop this morning.

Up until last night I’d not had any real difficulties getting a good night of sleep so far on this cut. I usually wake up a couple times per night to use the bathroom, but almost always fall right back asleep. This morning, though, I woke up shortly before 2:30 AM to urinate and just could not fall back asleep! I remained in bed for about 45 minutes, tossing and turning. At about 3:15 AM… [Read more]

Sticky Pod update: improved design! The new Sticky Pods, Large (10" x 5" x 1") and Small (6" x 4.75" x 1").

Some of you may recall the article I wrote last June, “What I carry on road rides“. When I published that blog I was storing most of my emergency repair gear in an under-the-saddle bag (the excellent ). About a month after I wrote that article, I ditched the saddle bag in favor of another product called the , which is designed to be carried in a jersey pocket. Shortly after making that change, I… [Read more]

When will I end the cut?

My scale weight has not moved so far this week. This is not a real concern, as fat loss is rarely linear. In fact, there have already been a couple weeks on this cut during which I lost no weight right up until a day or so before my weekly Sunday progress report. So while I’m not about to cry “Plateau!” just yet, I do need to consider that possibility. With only about a week… [Read more]

Very sad pond landscaping images… Sonny is hauling ass towards me here. :) There's still some dead stuff that needs to come out behind the waterfall berm.

If you missed this blog, you might want to give it a quick read. If you’re pressed for time, the long story made short is that Lisa and I are completely redoing the landscaping around our backyard pond. Killing the existing plants with Roundup was the easy part. We also had two nights of hard freezes, which certainly helped the process (and really hurt the grass). Once everything died all the dead plants and weeds… [Read more]

No more measuring my waist at the wrong spot; New progress photo. With two weeks left to go on my 2015 cut, my waist measurement is just a hair over 29".

In yesterday’s weekly progress report, I wrote that for the first time in my 13 year JSF history my waist measurement was below 30″. That measurement is actually a bit misleading (my waist size is actually lower), and this morning I’d like to explain why my waist measurement has always been wrong… When I decided to get my shit together back in 2003, I was very new to fitness and proper fat loss techniques. Obviously…. [Read more]

2015 cut progress report: week #7 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #7 of my 2015 cut is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. PLEASE NOTE: A few words about my methodologies and body fat percentage My body fat, tape measurements and scale weight are all performed while fasted (first thing in the morning before eating or drinking). All measurements are taken “cold” (no pump), and flexed. A 7-point or 9-point body fat caliper pinch test is the most accurate “at-home” method of… [Read more]

2015 cut: just 2 weeks remaining!

With just two weeks left to go in my 2015 cut, I’m right on target to hit my goal weight of 155.x pounds. Before my cut started, I wrote that my cut would be ending, at the latest, the weekend of March 7th. The reason for this fixed date is because my mom and a good friend are coming for a visit from Texas, and they’ll be staying with us all that week. I don’t… [Read more]

…and now for something completely different! Our backyard oasis. I tackled the pond project in the summer of 2010 and it was worth every last second of blood, sweat and blisters.

Long-time readers know that I sometimes write blogs about various other interests of mine that relate–sometimes loosely–to health and fitness. For example, I often talk about the herbs, peppers and tomatoes I grow each spring, my non-edible gardens, landscaping and even the myriad of springtime projects that I take on each year. As cold as it is right now in many parts of the country, it’s hard to believe that spring is just around the… [Read more]

Nutritional adjustments were spot-on; Excellent training ride yesterday. Flying through a chicane on an absolutely stunning Central Florida day. I love riding in Lake County!

My past few blogs have focused on some of the unique challenges that often arise in the late stages of a fat loss diet. Eating below maintenance is especially demanding when you’re already very lean (for men, I’m talking about below 8% body fat) and also pushing yourself hard athletically. In Tuesday’s blog I discussed how important it is to listen to your body (see “All calories are not created equal; First progress photo of… [Read more]
