Site maintenance today…

I’ll be performing some maintenance on the main web JSF web site and underlying OS this morning. Today’s updates are just to the main site, and are not the big forum update that will be coming at some point in the near future. There will be some downtime involved, but it shouldn’t last for more than 30 minutes or so. Of course now that I’ve written that things will blow up in my face. :/… [Read more]

5-hour ENERGY review

Those of you who have been reading my blog for a long time are probably very surprised to see me review a product like . Apart from coffee, which I like strong and black, I don’t consume anything that could be considered a stimulant. Heck, I’m one of the few people I know who has never even had a single sip of . So WHY did I try this stuff? There’s a quick story behind… [Read more]

2015 maintenance progress report: Week #5 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #5 of my 2015 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. METHODS AND MINUTIA: A few words about my body fat test, scale weight and soft tape measurements My body fat, tape measurements and scale weight are all performed while fasted (first thing in the morning before eating or drinking). All measurements are taken “cold” (no pump), and flexed. A 7-point or 9-point body fat caliper pinch test is… [Read more]

Almost forgot this one… I don't have an image for this morning's blog, so here's a picture I took last night of Lisa and Sonny playing. That bandage on Lisa's arm is because Sonny plays rough.

I’m doing the infamous “Lakemont Long” ride this morning (infamous both for its speed, and crashes). I’ll take the speed, but hopefully I’m all stocked up on my share of crashes for now. This ride is a bit of a drive to get to, and my friend Hector is picking me up at 6:30 sharp. So I’m rushing around while trying to make sure I don’t forget anything critical, but I can’t shake this nagging… [Read more]

Injury update (with pictures) 5 days after the accident.

A few of you have inquired about how the minor injuries I sustained on Sunday (see “Hit by a truck on yesterday’s solo metric century“) are doing. Thanks for asking, I’m doing well! The biggest issue was that both of my knees were feeling fairly achy in the days following the accident. I think what happened is that my handlebars impacted my right knee, and my left knee hit the pavement when I went down…. [Read more]

Zipp comes through in a big way…

Some of you may recall that while I was on vacation in March, my rear Zipp 404 Firecrest carbon clincher experienced a cracked flange (photograph). That is Zipp’s “V7” 188 hub that cracked on me. Zipp 188 hubs V7 and lower have a radial lacing design, which is widely regarded as a really Bad Idea (I’m not a wheel builder, so that information comes from others much more knowledgeable than I am). Zipp acknowledged this… [Read more]

Facebook and JSF

When I created my Facebook account in 2008, I did so reluctantly. In fact, when my Facebook account was created there was a debate on the JSF Forums (down in the Wasteland) about whether or not the account was really mine, or a fake. It was my account. This came as a surprise to many, as I’d stated on more than one occasion that I had no interest in being on Facebook. Without giving it… [Read more]

Evaluating my cycling progress over the past year. Ridden Sunday, May 3, 2015.

The route that I did on Sunday’s solo training ride was the exact same route I rode on another solo training ride I did almost exactly 1 year ago. My original intention–and the stats geek in me was pretty excited about this–was to compare and contrast the two rides in yesterday’s blog. Unfortunately the whole truck thing became the focus of yesterday’s blog. I’d like to put that unfortunate event behind me now, and get… [Read more]

Hit by a truck on yesterday’s solo metric century This stings a little.

I’m not much for drama, so I want to state right up front that I’m okay and–more importantly–my bike is okay. I’m a little scraped up and sore this morning, but nothing’s broken. I always think it’s odd when someone is involved in an accident like the one I had yesterday and people say to him or her, “You were very lucky!” I figure lucky people don’t get hit by trucks in the first place…. 2015 maintenance progress report: Week #4 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #4 of my 2015 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. Note that I took last week off from blogging, so when you see “last week” below that actually refers to two weeks ago. METHODS AND MINUTIA: A few words about my body fat test, scale weight and soft tape measurements My body fat, tape measurements and scale weight are all performed while fasted (first thing in the morning… [Read more]
