Is it fall yet?
When I stepped outside for my rides early on Saturday and Sunday mornings, my Sunglasses fogged up instantly and I felt as if I’d just walked into a sauna. The heat and humidity this summer have been off the charts here in Central Florida. Those who have lived here for at least a few years are accustomed to steaming hot summers, but this year has been about the worst I can recall since I moved here in 1989. Maybe part of it is my age, or that I’ve been spending more time outside riding than ever before, but a lot of my friends have said the same thing.
Some cyclists are not affected by the heat as much as others. I am one of those athletes whose performance takes a noticeable hit as the temperature rises. Cardiac drift is real issue for me. My performance on the bike this summer has been fairly solid, but the heat is definitely my Kryptonite. As things cool down, my strength and endurance on the bike skyrockets.
September is usually far from cool, but things should improve slightly over the next month or so.
Then, finally, October. While much of the rest of the country is bracing for winter, we’ll be enjoying some of the finest cycling weather imaginable here in Central Florida. Nothing makes me want to ride my bike more than crisp fall mornings and clear blue skies! I plan to put in some big, fast miles in October. 🙂
