#1There are several components that make up any proper fat loss program: sound diet, exercise, dedication, determination and consistency (just to name a few). All of those things are, in my opinion, extremely important to success.

I’m often asked what my #1 transformation or fat loss tip is. Some are surprised that it doesn’t involve any of the things I just listed. So, then, what it is?


In addition to my own personal experience in this area, over the past 12 years I’ve corresponded with thousands of dieters and would-be dieters. The vast majority of those who were successful have one thing in common: they told everyone around them what their goals were, and they maintained a public forum journal (the JSF Forum is a great place to do this), and/or they began a web site or blog. In my case, I did all of these things.

Taking your fat loss program public is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal. This is for two primary reasons: support and accountability.

I’ll give you a very recent personal example…

Over the course of my 2015 maintenance program I allowed my weight to slowly creep up. While my body fat level was still acceptable (around 10% towards the end), the added weight was affecting my cycling performance. Lamenting that fact, I stated over and over in my Sunday progress reports that I was going to try to “drop a few pounds”. The problem with that was the ambiguity. Even though I was blogging about it, I didn’t have a firm goal to which I was going to hold myself publicly accountable. Predictably, my scale weight remained stagnant.

So, this week I started a “formal” cut with a clearly defined plan and goal. Now that I’ve made those things known to everyone around me (in real life and online), public accountability has become a driving force. I’m a man of my word, and so when I tell someone that I’m going to do something it gets done. If I tell a bunch of people I’m going to do something, the compulsion is even stronger.

    • Not sure what you’re seeing, but I have nothing in place that should ask you to download a swf file. Can’t duplicate it on this end, tried two computers, a phone, a tablet and a total of 8 browsers. No reports from others, either.
