“Free” foods

Lisa was at her parent’s house last night, so I was dining alone. Normally when I am preparing broccoli for dinner she and I split about 4 cups. Since I was flying solo last night–and quite hungry–I decided to go ahead and prepare the entire 4 cups of broccoli for myself (along with a grilled chicken breast, 1 cup of cooked rice and a little awesomesauce on the side).

Last night's veggie. I like a little broccoli with my fresh ground black pepper.

Broccoli is one of those foods that is not only great for you, but you can literally eat as much of it as you want. 4 cups of broccoli has just 120 calories, and when you consider the number of calories your body will burn digesting it, it’s virtually calorie free (in fact broccoli is widely considered a “negative calorie” food for this reason). Also, because broccoli contains very few calories by volume, it’s a great way to fill up an empty stomach. I went to bed last night feeling stuffed!

There are lots of other foods that fall into this category, so if broccoli is not your thing then take a look at cauliflower, spinach, green beans, lettuce, asparagus, brussel sprouts, cabbage and beets (just to name a few).
