A couple days ago I received the cycling kit (bib shorts and race cut jersey), the long-sleeved skinsuit (used for Time Trials) and the shoe covers (also used for Time Trials) for the upcoming 2016 race season.
I knew my sizes for the kit and the shoe covers, so I wasn’t worried about those things, but I wasn’t 100% sure about the skinsuit since I’ve never needed one before.
For almost all brands I usually wear an XL bib short, and a M race cut jersey. The reason I have to size up the bibs is because of my big quads. I can’t even get M bibs over my quads, and L bibs are uncomfortably tight. The XL bibs are little “long” for me, but they fit my quads well, and so I go with those.
The thing about skinsuits, though, is they are a singlet design–no mixing and matching of top and bottoms is possible. Skinsuits are supposed to be extremely tight, almost to the point that it is difficult to stand up straight. After talking with a few friends who are about my size, I decided to go with Medium. I was worried that I would not be able to get the thing past my quads, but I knew anything larger than a Medium would probably be baggy up top, defeating the purpose of a skinsuit.
Thankfully the skinsuit fit perfectly! It’s very tight, but not uncomfortably so. All I can say is it’s a good thing I decided to cut, as there’s no way the skinsuit would have fit me 1 month ago. I’m glad I still have another 5 pounds to go, as this sucker leaves nothing to the imagination.
I was already excited about the upcoming race season, but now I’m even more stoked!
