2015/2016 maintenance progress report: Week #13 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #13 of my 2015/2016 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. METHODOLOGY: A few words about my body fat test, scale weight and soft tape measurements My body fat, tape measurements and scale weight are all performed while fasted (first thing in the morning before eating or drinking). All measurements are taken “cold” (no pump), and flexed. A 7-point or 9-point body fat caliper pinch test is the most… [Read more]

My homebrewed combo Edge/Virb aerobar mount failed I can't blame Zipp for this failure. The mount was not designed to support the weight of a camera.

This past November I posted an article discussing how I hacked together a combo Garmin cycling computer/Garmin Virb Camera mount. That setup worked great for a couple of months, but last Saturday the Zipp mounting bracket used to secure the whole assembly to my time trial bike’s aerobars snapped in half, sending my Garmin Virb camera and my Edge 810 cycling computer flying. 🙁   Thankfully both the Edge 810 and the Virb survived, although… [Read more]

Getting this year’s broken toe out of the way early… One of my better efforts.

I generally like to break my big toe once per calendar year, and so this year I was delighted to have done so nice and early! I actually broke the toe last week, but I wanted to wait until the injury was fully ripened before taking a photo:   I know many of you are in the process of cutting fat for the New Year, and I doubt anyone reading this is hungry right now…. My time trial bike fitting experience with Cat One Fitness My position on the TT bike is much improved after the professional bike fitting.

A little over a week ago I did my first time trial race, the CFL Holiday TT Series Race #1 (here’s my race report). Photographs were taken at that event, and when I saw my position on the time trial bike I was pretty surprised to see that I was not nearly as aero on the bike as I felt. Was I starting to sit up when the picture was taken? Perhaps–the photograph was, after… [Read more]

Sonny and Buckley update; Pro TT bike fitting completed. Buckley (L) and Sonny enjoying the cool weather with a little keep away action.

I think my dogs, Sonny and Buckley, read yesterday’s blog. This morning they were both crawling all over me and licking my face about 4:45, and I was up and sipping my first cup of coffee before 5:00 AM. Nice work, pups! Speaking of the dogs, they are both doing great! Buckley, who is the newest addition to our pack (see this blog), has grown quite a bit since we found him in September. He’s… [Read more]

I’m sleeping too late

Just a quickie this morning, I’ve got a really busy day ahead and need to get things moving. Of all the mornings to oversleep… Actually, I’m not sure I can even call it “oversleeping” at this point. For some reason I’ve been waking up later than usual for a couple of weeks now. I’m normally up between 4:30 and 5:00 each morning, but lately it’s been more like 6:00 to 6:30. I think I even… [Read more]

Jaybird X2 Bluetooth earbuds: verdict

Some of you may recall that I started using Jaybird’s Freedom Sprint earbuds in the late summer of 2015. Unfortunately three pair of the Freedom Sprint earbuds failed in a relatively short time (see this blog for the full story). While I was obviously not impressed with the Freedom Sprint earbuds, I was very impressed with Jaybird’s customer service. After the third pair failed, Jaybird replaced them with their top of the line X2 Sport… [Read more]

Got caught in a helluva storm yesterday! KA-BOOOOOOM!

Despite the forecast for high wind, rain and strong thunderstorms, I was planning to do 45-50 miles yesterday. I was watching the radar closely, and it looked as if I might have about a two-hour window during which I could sneak in a ride. When I rolled out it was not raining, but the roads were wet and slick. The wind was blowing something fierce, 20+ MPH, with much stronger gusts. Wet roads + high… [Read more]

I’ve been pigging out this week!

I don’t know what’s gotten into me, but all week long I’ve been ravenous. My training miles/time/intensity have all been about average, and so I’m not really sure what’s going on. All I really know is that I’ve not been at all strict, and I have been eating well above maintenance. My diet has been clean (er… mostly), but I’m still up a couple of pounds this week. My scale weight this morning is perilously… [Read more]
