My homebrewed combo Edge/Virb aerobar mount failed

This past November I posted an article discussing how I hacked together a combo Garmin cycling computer/Garmin Virb Camera mount. That setup worked great for a couple of months, but last Saturday the Zipp mounting bracket used to secure the whole assembly to my time trial bike’s aerobars snapped in half, sending my Garmin Virb camera and my Edge 810 cycling computer flying. 🙁

I can't blame Zipp for this failure. The mount was not designed to support the weight of a camera.

Thankfully both the Edge 810 and the Virb survived, although they both sustained some cosmetic damage.

If you built one of these setups based on the instructions I provided in the November blog, I have to recommend that you stop using it. I figured the Zipp mount was made of strong polycarbonate, but it seems to be made of a much less durable plastic. Lesson learned.

I had a spare Zipp computer mount, but I don’t currently have a camera mount that will work with aerobars on a TT bike. I’m going to research that later today. I hate riding without a camera running.
