Quick update on the state of things Coming across the finish line at the CFL Holiday TT series, race #2.

I wanted to post a brief update on what’s been happening since the blog I posted about a week ago (“Taking some time off, big changes happening…“). First, and foremost, I want to thank everyone who contacted me with moral support, job leads and ideas. I was inspired and touched by the outpouring. I promise to answer every email, but I am lagging behind. One of the reasons I’m behind on everything is that last… [Read more]

Taking some time off, big changes happening…

I found out last week that the company to which I’ve devoted the last 17 years of my life has decided to close shop. I’ve worn many hats over the course of those 17 years. I was hired as a programmer, and hit the ground running with a very tough 3-month deadline for a massive project. After completing the project successfully on schedule, I transitioned into the role of senior network administrator. Most of my… [Read more]

2015/2016 maintenance progress report: Week #14 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #14 of my 2015/2016 maintenance program is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. METHODOLOGY: A few words about my body fat test, scale weight and soft tape measurements My body fat, tape measurements and scale weight are all performed while fasted (first thing in the morning before eating or drinking). All measurements are taken “cold” (no pump), and flexed. A 7-point or 9-point body fat caliper pinch test is the most… [Read more]

Did that century yesterday, I think my gambit worked! Quick stop on yesterday's training ride (L-R: Me, Chris, Sebastian). Photo credit: Christopher Garcia

I’ve been fighting off a cold or something most of this week. I felt particularly crappy on Wednesday’s ride, and even worse all day Thursday (see yesterday’s blog if you missed it). Yesterday I had a 100+ mile training ride scheduled with my usual Friday training partners, Chris and Sebastian. I’d been looking forward to the ride all week long, and had even created a very cool route just for this particular ride. I warned… [Read more]

Fighting something off, may be making a mistake today

In yesterday’s blog I wrote that I was feeling off on Wednesday’s ride, and for the rest of the day. Yesterday I felt even worse, like I was getting sick or something. Well, at least now I know what was wrong on Wednesday! This morning I’m still not feeling well, but I’m not any worse, either. I suppose the prudent thing to do would be to take it easy today and rest. The problem with… [Read more]

Not a great ride yesterday, heat got to me? Slight exaggeration.

It’s been really hot here the past few days, and I’ve been working up quite a sweat on my morning rides. I’m not sure if it was the heat, the wind, fatigue, stress or a combination of those things, but on yesterday’s ride I felt horrible! Actually, when I rolled out I felt pretty good, but about halfway through the ride the wheels came off. It wasn’t my imagination, either: my heart rate was really… [Read more]

Remembering Loki today Loki getting a Christmas treat!

Fitness and bikes are not on my mind this morning, so I hope you’ll indulge me while I write a little bit about what is. It was two years ago today that Lisa and I had to say goodbye to our beloved family member, Loki. Loki was a HUGE part of our lives, and he was a member of our pack for an amazing 18 years! There has literally not been a day since we… [Read more]

Working on improving my position on the TT bike

Ever since my time trial bike fitting I’ve really started focusing on my position when I’m riding. Air resistance is the number one thing that slows a cyclist down, and while equipment and a good bike fitting will help reduce drag, it’s up to each cyclist to hone his or her riding position. I’ve got a couple of bad habits that I’m trying to break… The first is that I tend to hunch up my… [Read more]
