New JSF Forums are getting close to launch! One of the new dark premium JSF forum themes. I'm still working on this one, but it's coming together nicely.

Yesterday was another long and very productive day working on the new JSF forum software. The new software has a completely different permission system than the old forum, and so there was quite a bit of work to be done in that area. I’ve got a good grasp on the new permission system, and have completed 95% of that work. Yesterday I selected several themes (these are user-selectable), and started working on customizing those. A… [Read more]

New JSF Forum: progress report & features Google's new reCAPTCHA system is genius.

I had another very productive day yesterday as I continued to prepare the brand new JSF Forums for launch. The more I use the new software, the more I love it. I know you all are going to dig it, too. It’s fast, user-friendly, packed with amazing features, encourages interactivity and is tightly integrated with social media. Of course the social media stuff is purely optional. If you have no use for Facebook, Twitter and… [Read more]

Forum update; Official JSF Facebook page is launched. Performing the forum data import last night.

Yesterday afternoon I shut down the existing JSF Forums and began migrating the data over to the new forum software. The JSF Forums database contains a massive amount of information and knowledge, generated by a collective of more than 30,000 members over nearly 13 years. It’s a really big database. 🙂 Over the past week I’ve done extensive testing on the new system using the actual forum data, so I was reasonably certain there would… [Read more]

Tired, but making good progress; Forum software replacement update. My best friend over the past week.

The dogs woke me up yesterday morning at 4:00am. It was a pretty bad morning for the dogs to do that, as I’d slept very poorly that night. Operating on less than 4 hours of really broken sleep, I worked all day, but my head was in a fog. I made a lot of stupid mistakes as I worked on the servers and software. My typing was abysmal. I felt like I was wearing mittens…. [Read more]

Spring 2016 cut progress report: Week #2 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #2 of my spring 2016 cut is complete, and it’s time for my weekly progress report. METHODOLOGY: A few words about my body fat test, scale weight and soft tape measurements My body fat, tape measurements and scale weight are all performed while fasted (first thing in the morning before eating or drinking). All measurements are taken “cold” (no pump), and flexed. A 7-point or 9-point body fat caliper pinch test is the most… [Read more]

The new JSF mobile site is live! Screenshot of the new JSF mobile site

This has been an extremely productive week. The new O/S, web server and database are all configured, optimized and settled in. The migration of the main JSF site (this site) is pretty much done now, and everything seems to be running very well. I’m currently doing a test import of the JSF forums to the new forum software. So far things are going better than expected. All the member data, post counts, signatures, private messages,… [Read more]

Major server maintenance started yesterday (important information)

A couple weeks ago I mentioned that there were going to be some major changes happening here, and I started on those changes yesterday. There will be periods of downtime here on the main site, and also on the forums, as I work on the server over the next week or so. Last week I created a test VM running CentOS, NGINX and MariaDB. I really like a lot of what I saw, but the… [Read more]

HelloFresh vegetarian box, round two! Another HelloFresh success: Chipotle Seitan Chili with Bell Pepper, Cheddar, and Jasmine Rice!

This week we’re giving the recipe/ingredient delivery service HelloFresh a try (we went with the vegetarian box). If you missed it, you can check out my experience with the first recipe here. On deck last night was Chipotle Seitan Chili with Bell Pepper, Cheddar, and Jasmine Rice. First, if you’re not familiar with seitan (pronounced “sey-tan” \m/), it’s a wheat-based vegetarian meat substitute. From Wikipedia: Wheat gluten, also called seitan wheat meat, gluten meat, or… [Read more]

Yet another MP3 player drowns in a pool of my sweat Aukey Bluetooth Earbuds. Less than 20 bucks, let's see how they hold up compared to the nearly $200 X2 earbuds.

Apparently my sweat is about a half-step less corrosive than battery acid. Last week my “sweat-proof” X2 earbuds died after a sweaty ride (see this blog), and on Monday while riding the indoor trainer my SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip gave up the ghost as it let out an eardrum shattering dubstep-esque glitching sound. I’ve now burned through 5 pair of Jaybird earbuds in less than a year, and 3 or 4 Clip Zips. Sansa claims… [Read more]

HelloFresh Vegetarian box arrived yesterday–first meal, review My first HelloFresh dish: Edamame and Sweet Potato Rice Bowl With Spinach Salad

Yesterday my first HelloFresh box arrived, right on schedule! The box was well-packed, and well-chilled. Each meal (3 meals for two people) had all of its ingredients in its own box, which was appreciated. I went through each meal box and, overall, was very happy with the quality of the ingredients. The bell pepper was a little wrinkled and soft, the fresh tomato was not too impressive looking (but not overly-ripe or bruised) and the… [Read more]
