My X2 earbuds died; That’s 5 pair of Jaybirds in less than a year.
Towards the end of this past January, I gave my final review on the Jaybird X2 Bluetooth earbuds (see Jaybird X2 Bluetooth earbuds: verdict). When I wrote that review, the X2s were still functioning, but I was starting to have issues with disconnects and reduced battery life. Based on my past experience with Jaybird Bluetooth earbuds, I was concerned that these problems were symptoms of an early death.
I was right to be worried.
During the cooler months I sweat during my rides, but not obviously nearly as heavily as I do once the weather turns warm. Over the past week or so we’ve seen highs over 90° most days (yeah, I know–and it’s still winter), and I’ve been sweating like crazy. It only took a couple of these hot rides for the X2s to die on me. When I put the earbuds on the charger the red light comes on, and eventually turns to green once the buds have a full charge, but that’s the only sign of life. They will not power on, they will not reset. They are dead.
I know I already posted my review (thankfully in that review I did not recommend these pricey earbuds), but I wanted to do a quick follow-up to let everyone know that yet another pair of Jaybird earbuds have failed on me. This brings the grand total to FIVE pair of Jaybird earbuds that have failed in less than one year. That’s ridiculous. Ridiculous, but not unusual: many others have had similar experiences, just do a search.
As I wrote in my review, I understand that defective products make their way past QC sometimes, but this is not that. Despite Jaybird’s marketing claims and “lifetime sweat warranty”, their earbuds are clearly NOT sweat-proof.
If you’re your looking for a set of Bluetooth earbuds to wear while training, I recommend that you check out one of the many competing brands that sell for a small fraction of the X2’s price (and with the same, or better, average customer ratings).
